After lunch and a short walk, get back in the car and drive the rest of the way to Solvang. I’d plan on another 2 1/2 hours or so .
Guide to Visiting Solvang: A Danish-Inspired Gem
After a not too long drive, you’ll arrive in one of the best places to stop on a California road trip.
Solvang is a charming Danish village nestled in the heart of California’s wine country. With its picturesque streets, delicious pastries, and rich cultural heritage, it offers a fun little fairy tale escape from the ordinary and a super unique experience as part of a larger trip. Here’s your guide to experiencing the best of Solvang, including local attractions, eateries, and where to stay.
We spent two nights in Solvang, arriving late in the afternoon and leaving late in the morning on the third day. This felt like the perfect amount of time, giving us a full day to explore.
Exploring Solvang’s Attractions
Birkholm’s Bakery: Start your day with a visit to Birkholm’s Bakery, a local favorite known for its delectable Danish pastries (you’re welcome in advance). Treat yourself to a flaky kringle, a traditional Danish pastry filled with nuts, fruit, or cream. They also have great gluten free options, and make a great cup of coffee to complete your morning treats.
Hans Christian Andersen Museum: Dive into the world of fairy tales at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. Learn about the life and works of the famous Danish author through exhibits showcasing original manuscripts, illustrations, and artifacts. This adorable museum is the second floor of a lovely bookstore (the Book Loft) that is a fun spot to explore as well.
Viking Museum: Immerse yourself in Nordic history at the Viking Museum. Explore displays of authentic Viking artifacts, including weaponry, jewelry, and household items. Gain insight into the fascinating culture and traditions of the Norse people while marveling at their craftsmanship and ingenuity. This small museum is housed in a larger store that has some VERY cool LEGO displays as well!
Dining in Solvang
Copenhagen Sausage Garden: For a taste of Denmark in Solvang, head to the Copenhagen Sausage Garden. Indulge in authentic Danish sausages served with traditional accompaniments like pickles, onions, and mustard. They had amazing baked pretzels and YES all the sausages are gluten free!

Sink your teeth into juicy burgers made with locally sourced beef and topped with creative combinations of fresh ingredients. Don’t forget to order a side of crispy fries or onion rings for the ultimate burger feast. We loved the shakes and the casual family vibe!
Solvang Restaurant: For a cozy dining experience steeped in Danish tradition, dine at Solvang Restaurant. Feast on hearty Scandinavian dishes like frikadeller (Danish meatballs), stegt flæsk (crispy pork belly), and smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches). Save room for dessert, as their selection of Danish pastries is not to be missed. The Solvang Restaurant is famous for it’s Aebleskiver (sphere shaped pancakes)….these are a DO NOT miss. california road trip itinerary 7 days : Days 4 and 5 Monterey

The Green Olive serves amazing mediterranean food and has lovely picnic tables overlooking the ocean.
Your Ultimate Guide to Exploring Monterey
Welcome to Monterey, a coastal town nestled along California’s rugged central coast. From its iconic aquarium to its scenic waterfront, Monterey offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and family-friendly activities. It’s one of my personal favorite places to visit and a must do for a california road trip itinerary 7 days (or anything longer).
Must-Visit Attractions
Monterey Bay Aquarium: A must do: dive into the wonders of the ocean at the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Explore some of the best exhibits showcasing marine life from the Monterey Bay and beyond, including playful sea otters, graceful jellyfish, and majestic sharks. Don’t miss the iconic Kelp Forest exhibit, where you can immerse yourself in an underwater forest teeming with life. This is one of the BEST aquariums in the world, and so much fun to visit! I’d plan on a minimum of 4 hours to visit. We arrived at opening and stayed until about 1:30 pm. This felt rushed. You can also explore cannery row the same day.
Dennis the Menace Park: Let the kids burn off some energy at Dennis the Menace Park, a beloved playground featuring whimsical structures, climbing walls, slides, and more. With plenty of shaded areas and picnic spots, it’s the perfect place for families to relax and play amidst lush greenery and towering trees. This was one of the top recommended places from our Instagram community and with good reason, it’s a total blast!
Carmel Bakery: Treat yourself to freshly baked delights at Carmel Bakery, a local institution since 1906. Indulge in buttery croissants, flaky pastries, and artisanal breads made with the finest ingredients. Pair your treats with a cup of gourmet coffee or hot chocolate for a delightful pick-me-up. You can stop by the original location in Carmel or the newer offshoot in the Portola Hotel!
Exploring Monterey’s Waterfront
Wharf Walk: Take a leisurely stroll along Monterey’s historic Fisherman’s Wharf, where you’ll find charming shops, seafood restaurants, and stunning views of the bay. Keep an eye out for playful sea lions basking in the sun and fishing boats unloading their daily catch. Be sure to snap some photos of the picturesque harbor and colorful fishing boats bobbing in the water.
This was the perfect activity after we arrived and checked in to our hotel. We made it in time for sunset, saw tons of otters and it was a nice way to stretch our legs!
Dining in Monterey
Alvarado Brewing Company: Looking for a quick and casual dinner spot? Quench your thirst and satisfy your appetite at Alvarado Street Brewery & Grill. They have a great selection of craft beers brewed on-site, ranging from hoppy IPAs to crisp lagers and rich stouts. The menu has hearty pub fare, including burgers, tacos, and wood-fired pizzas. We loved this spot!
Where to Stay: Portola Hotel & Spa
We first stayed at the Portola Hotel and Spa YEARS ago…..and I’m happy to report that during our most recent visit, it still was a lovely experience. It is located in the heart of Monterey’s historic downtown. You can easily walk to the wharf and it’s a VERY short drive to the Aquarium. This elegant waterfront hotel offers upscale accommodations, impeccable service, and a ton of amenities to enhance your stay. It has spacious guest rooms and suites featuring plush bedding, modern furnishings, and stunning views of the harbor or surrounding cityscape. Pamper yourself with a visit to the hotel’s award-winning spa, where you can enjoy rejuvenating treatments inspired by the sea. After a day of exploring Monterey’s attractions, savor coastal cuisine and craft cocktails at one of the hotel’s acclaimed restaurants or lounges. With its prime location, this is a PERFECT place to stay during a California road trip.
