Heading to the Holy City? These are the best things to do in Charleston SC with kids (that are also fun for grownups)!

We just returned to San Diego from a weeklong trip to South Carolina (my husband's home state) after four long years.  This was our longest trip to Charleston, and it was a LOVELY time of year to travel (we have done summer, spring and winter in the city and I have to say, Spring is my favorite).

The weather was mild, which allowed us to do a ton of fun things outdoors and to visit some of the top things on our must do list.

Over the years, we've visited Charleston a number of times (my husband grew up in Columbia, South Carolina but we have friends and family in Charleston).  We definitely have some favorite activities that I would put on our list of the best things to do in Charleston SC with kids.

Now, some of these are probably predictable, but some may be a little more off the beaten path.  But for our family? These are absolutely the best places to take kids under the age of 10 if you are visiting Charleston.

The Best Things to do in Charleston Sc With Kids

Charleston is a smaller city, and if you have a car you can definitely do multiple areas in a day.  Most of what I'm sharing is in the downtown area…….but I'll note where you'll be venturing further out or may need a car.

Charleston with Kids: Carriage Tours and Walking Tours Worth the Money

Let's start with tours.  There are MANY options for tours from a carriage tour to a pedi cab to a ghost tour (maybe leave that one for the grown ups and older kids) to some great walking tour options…..whichever you choose, these are great ways to learn a TON about the city.

In fact, we JUST did a tour for the first time on our last trip and I'm so glad we did.  Most tour guides have been in the industry in Charleston for YEARS and they're a wealth of knowledge.  Our tour guide was celebrating his 25th year and wow did he teach us a ton.

We chose to do a carriage ride through downtown Charleston, we saw all the historic homes, churches, and historic sites, and the whole family had a blast, it was like we saw our history lessons coming alive.

Best Places to Go In Charleston with Kids: Don't Miss Museums

Charleston is home to some amazing museums.  If you are visiting during more extreme weather months (hello humidity), these are some of the best ways to head inside for a bit of a break from the elements. The children’s museum of low country is a great place if you are still in the imaginative play stages, the north charleston fire museum is SUPER cool, and so is the charleston museum (one of the oldest museums in the country).  I also love the gibbes museum of art (they've got some VERY cool rotating exhibits as well as great permanent exhibits).

Top things to Do in Charleston Beyond Downtown

Now, let's venture beyond the historic downtown area.  Charleston has a ton of fun islands / neighborhoods that each has it's own unique flavor.  On this trip we visited folly beach county park for the first time and absolutely loved it.  You can easily park and walk to the sand, and the main drag in town has some fun spots to shop and eat.
I'd plan a half day minimum for the beach here if you can!  We've also done the beach on the Isle of Palms, which is a short drive from downtown.  For both of these you'll need a car or a ride share.
On this last trip, we also did a day at Bull's Island which was super unique and a ton of fun….in fact, this was one of my favorite things we've done on any trip to Charleston.  If you are looking for The Best Things to do in Charleston Sc With Kids, this is a unique activity to add to your agenda.
Bull's Island is a National Wildlife Refuge, and you'll need to take a ferry boat ride to it.  There are only a few a day (buy tickets in advance online).  It's great for hiking, there is a beach, tons of wildlife (we saw alligators, dolphins, a million birds, hermit crabs), and spending a day.
You can carry food and stop at any point or eat at the picnic tables near the ferry dock.  If you're visiting with younger children, I would suggest not hiking the perimeter, it's pretty long.  You can easily explore and stay closer to the dock area.
On past trips, one of our favorite unique activities for both young children and older children (and the adults)…… a Charleston Riverdogs game! Their minor league team is a ton of fun to watch, and the games are a total blast (plus a pretty good deal).

Best Places to Go In Charleston with Kids: Must Try Food Spots

Also on my list of the best things to do in Charleston SC with kids? EAT!!!! Charleston has a ton of fancy, grown up restaurants….but there are also some great places for families and kids of all ages.
A few of our favorites:
  • Queen Street Grocery: founded in 1922, this little cafe is way more than a grocery store.  They serve AMAZING crepes, breakfast and sandwiches (yes they have gluten free options), and are a great casual lunch stop in the main city of charleston
  • Black Magic Cafe: this small cafe on James Island (en route to Folly Beach) has the best ambiance and decor, amazing fun coffee drinks and is SUPER kid friendly.
  • Poe’s Tavern: Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island is a fun gastropub with great food (perfect for lunch or a casual dinner).
Planning a family vacation to Charleston? Or had one recently? I'd love to hear your thoughts on The Best Things to do in Charleston Sc With Kids…..leave your favorites in the comments!

….and also why are we commenting negatively abou ….and also why are we commenting negatively about people’s appearances in 2023?Double also: if the worst thing people on the interwebs can say about me is that they don’t like my smile…..then I feel pretty good about what type of person I’ve chosen to be.
💕Because we all want our kids to soar………⠀⠀So fitting right? Elvis named this plane after his daughter. And all I’ve been thinking about throughout our St Jude experience…..is how certain things truly bond all of us. Certain things cross economic barriers and continent and language differences. Parenthood is one of those. It’s a universal experience. And I think whether we are parents or role models or aunties or friends……we all know what it’s like to dream and hope on behalf of a child in your life.⠀⠀In 2012, when I was newly married and not yet a parent one of my students was diagnosed with cancer. Without revealing details about her or her family, I think it’s important to recognize that economic barriers prevented what should have been an earlier diagnosis. It was one of many times I was reminded during my time with the amazing humans in my classrooms that…..we do NOT all have the same access or experiences in life. That student and her family were one of the miracle stories. In fact, when she came back to class, she complained about missing soccer games at recess and fell right back in with the rest in a way that to this day brings joyful tears to my eyes. ⠀⠀I said this on my stories during my trip, but…..I didn’t realize until this experience that families at St Jude NEVER receive a bill. Ever. No matter what. That this access gives families hope during their darkest days.⠀⠀I’m going to be teaming up with St. Jude to do a fun challenge that will hopefully inspire y’all to support them too. Let’s just say that…..for this scared of heights, refuses to take my feet off the ground theme park girlie……I’m going to making the ultimate sacrifices.⠀⠀What rides would you want to see me go on in support of St Jude? (be kind, I’m literally TERRIFIED of any and all rides that have a height limit). You know they REALLY moved me if I’m even thinking of doing this! ⠀⠀@stjude #stjudeambassador
💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is fam 💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is famous for…..so many of you guessed it in stories last night!🦆The Peabody Hotel is famous for their duck parade. And we got to see it as a part of Day 1 of the St Jude Content Creator Summit. I’m in Memphis to learn all about how St Jude is doing life saving research to fight and cure childhood cancers.💕Real talk: I get to do a lot of fun things because of this little app but projects like this? Are an absolute honor. Did you know that patients at St Jude NEVER RECEIVE A BILL? What a gift to families in crisis. I’m so happy to share this next couple of days here in Memphis with y’all and to support such an important organization.🦆Now, swipe to see the ducks. @stjude #stjudeambassador
She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This s She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This stunning movie shows a princess who is absolutely……royal. Graceful. Brave and……the perfect mermaid. Years ago, I was sitting in the theater during the live action Lion King premiere just days after the Little Mermaid casting was announced. And in walked Halle Bailey. This young girl and all I could think was……how much weight of the world was on her shoulders. The room paused. And people everywhere stood. They applauded her and smiled and I thought…..she really is a princess. Halle, you are the epitome of royalty. Thank you for sharing your shine with the world.I would love to encourage you to follow these amazing creators who have been shining themselves and sharing a ton of special Little Mermaid experiences:@jenniferborget @erikaenchanted@davidvaughn@_the_adventurous_rjay@colormemagic@melizzablackLydia’s, Robbie’s and my full review of the film will be on the blog Monday morning. How excited are you for the film? Who is your favorite Little Mermaid character? #littlemermaid #colormemermaid #ariel
Mother’s Day Memories: Starting to wonder how ma Mother’s Day Memories: Starting to wonder how many more years we have of this family tradition before SOMEONE becomes a full blown teen / tween and the Happiest Place on Earth is a whole different vibeWe: hugged our favorite characters, danced every time mom got a coffee (swipe for that excellent content), Lydia and Robbie rode all the mountains, walked 22,000 steps on Saturday alone, and Robbie finally got to see Toontown for the first time since it’s reopening. We slept like rocks on the comfy beds at the JW Marriott (it was such a kind gesture when they offered to host us for Mother’s day weekend), I drank my morning coffee in their beautiful garden, and loved that it was a quick 15 minute walk to the Disneyland gates. If you are looking for a luxury hotel experience near Disneyland, I highly recommend. They have great dining options, a Starbucks in the lobby each morning, and a lovely pool. This was a perfect treat yourself location.Have you done a holiday at Disneyland? My favorites (in no particular order): Halloween (Oogie Boogie is the best), Holiday Time and Mother’s Day……each has it’s own unique flavor.@MarriottBonvoy #MarriottBonvoy @jwmarriottanaheim #jwmarriottanaheim #MarriottBonvoyMoments Hosted
