Let’s talk what to wear when jogging. From the best running tights to the best running shoes….these are some must haves for any new runner or experienced runner.
I’ve been jogging and running a few times a week for YEARS. Ironically, my dad was a serious runner my entire life and aside from a week in high school, I swore I’d NEVER become a runner.…until my early 30s. During a time when I was struggling with anxiety, I decided to try running one more time. I needed a simple goal, and a new healthy habit. I used interval training (the couch to 5k program) and…..it worked. Slowly but surely, I became a runner. And now? At home, on vacation, in rain or shine (ok I’m exaggerating, I don’t really run in rainy weather)….but you get the point. I run a lot and I love it. Disclaimer: I’m not the fastest, but I’m consistent and I love long runs around my neighborhood or a new area (lately my personal preference is to run a loop at the lake near our house).
What to Wear When Jogging
For experienced runners, this is old news. But if you’re a new runner? Trust me, having the right items to wear is an important thing. What to wear when jogging is just as important as knowing where to jog or how to train, it makes a huge difference in your comfort level and will help you to focus on ENJOYING your jog (the best thing about running is just….enjoying it).
Shop Running Staples:
- A Good Pair of Running Shoes: You can have all the best running gear in the world, but the main thing to think about? A GREAT pair of shoes. Initially, I got fitted for shoes at a running shop, which is always an option if you aren’t sure of the right size or the perfect pair for your needs. I’d consider whether you will be jogging on muddy trails or the roads and sidewalks in your town. I’ve personally found the Brooks Ghost Running Shoes to be a great option, New Balance sneakers have been great as well. I’d suggest trying these if you are still on the hunt for the right shoes.
- The Right Sports Bra: Listen, nothing ruins a run for me like an unsupportive sports bra. Whether you have a small or large chest, you’ll want support to prevent chafing during a run. I have a smaller chest (I wear a b cup)…..and I’d found that Athleta’s Conscious Crop sports bra are a great fit for my runs, I also really like Zella sports bras, and have found Old Navy’s high support bras to be a great bargain.
- Running Pants and Shorts: Have you tried jogging in ill fitting running pants? It’s NOT a pleasant experience. For me? With my pear shaped body, it drives me nuts when my pants are too low waisted. I hate the feeling of needing to constantly pull them up. For me? When it comes to running tights….. I love Athleta’s Ultra High Rise Elation 7/8 Tight or Salutation Joggers, my Zella Leggings , and Old Navy’s Powersoft leggings. In the warmer months? I do Athleta’s stash pocket shorts or Universal Standard’s bike shorts.
- Running Shirts and Jackets: During mid-weather seasons (Fall and Spring) or in more tepid climates, I absolutely run in old t-shirts and call it a day. For mid-level temperatures, breathable fabrics like cotton are totally fine for me and when the temperature drops just a bit, I can usually feel comfortable in long-sleeve t-shirts. But when it comes to Summer or Winter? I usually need more specific options (you can see details below). I do have a couple of light jackets that I love to run in when I need an extra layer, including this one from Athleta.
- Running Accessories: For me? Running accessories are all about comfort. I FINALLY decided to order a running belt for my phone and car key or house keys and it’s made a huge difference to have my hands free instead of holding things. Headphones also have made a huge difference for me, I use Airpods and they are perfect for longer runs.
What to Wear When Jogging: Cold Weather
Running during the winter months means that you can count on cold days and wind chill. For me? There’s nothing as peaceful as a winter run, WHEN YOU HAVE THE RIGHT GEAR. Even here in San Diego, running early in the morning can get awfully cold (especially if there is a wind chill). A few suggestions for winter running gear? Think merino wool or technical fabrics. Breathable, but will keep you warm (wool blends are good too). Layers are one of the best ways to stay comfortable on longer runs (since your body temperature will pick up after awhile and you may want to remove at least one layer). I’d suggest a favorite base layer (running tights and a long sleeved running top that can moisture-wick) and then a second layer (like this jacket) that you can remove in the winter months for maximum comfort. The best running jackets are light and flexible, can be removed quickly and tied around your waist on short runs.
Good Options for Cold Weather Runs:
What to Wear When Jogging: Hot Weather
Now let’s talk about the opposite issue, running in warm weather. I have to be honest, running in the heat is my LEAST favorite. But the good news? In most places? You can run earlier in the day even in the warmest months of the year. And one of the best things about an early morning run? It’s usually really peaceful and quiet! If you’re running in hot weather, moisture-wicking fabric will be key (you’ll sweat a ton and can chafe easily). I’d suggest getting a clothing item or two specifically for the really warm months: I usually do bike shorts, a great fitting sports bra and a synthetic blend tee or tank top. Having the right fabrics makes a big difference in the heat and makes your running experience a lot more pleasant!
