When I shared over on Instagram that I’d FINALLY given in and bought my first pair of Rothy’s shoes……the reaction surprised me.  I knew that these shoes had a strong fan base but….wow did I underestimate how much y’all LOVE these comfortable flats from sustainable materials.

Frankly, until I did a little research…..I didn’t understand what the big deal about one pair of shoes like these was.  Weren’t they just……shoes?  Nope, Rothy’s are a whole……movement.  Their shoes are made from sustainable materials (plastic water bottles to be exact) in San Francisco and their manufacturing process is set up to minimize waste.  In addition…..each pair of shoes is made to be completely machine washable and durable (so you get more uses out of them).

Now, all this SOUNDS great right? But are they REALLY washable shoes? Are they REALLY the comfortable shoes that they claim to be?

An Honest Rothy’s Review

Now, I’m hard on shoes.  From years of teaching to looking for shoes for long days on my feet as part of my Disneyland outfits……when I’m looking for comfortable shoes, I’m REALLY looking for comfortable.  My first pair of Rothy’s flats? I tried their sneakers.  And my first time wearing them? A 14 hour visit to Disneyland.  Yup.  Why not go all the way with a long time first wear.  In fact, I didn’t even break them in.  Not even a little bit.  I pulled my Rothy’s sneakers straight out of the box and wore them.  I figured….it was for research for this Rothy’s review, right? Not going to lie, I brought an alternate pair of shoes just in case….but the good news? I never needed them.

When it comes to overall comfort? I was pleasantly surprised.  Yup, I wore them ALLLLLLL day.  And I got a LOT of messages from y’all.  So many teachers saying that Rothy’s are your go to women’s shoes for a long day of teaching.  I can see WHY these are on regular rotation in your teaching outfits.  They’re cute and comfortable.  From long walks to a full day in the classroom, I can see why a lot of people recommended them.

So, it’s a yes from me.  I love these shoes, in fact…..I just ordered another pair of the sneakers and I’m eyeing the Driver loafers.  Do I think they’re worth the money? Yes I do.  Are these investment shoes? Yes they are.  But to me? Worth every penny for comfort and for amount of use.  I wear mine A LOT.

Rothy’s Shoes : Styles Available

Rothy’s shoes come in a number of different styles…..all with the same basic idea.  Comfort and easily cleanable.

Rothy’s Flats: The flat from Rothy’s are probably the classic pair you are thinking of when you imagine the brand.  These classics have a rounded toe box and come in both classic colors and prints.

Rothy’s The Point: If you love a more elevated look and a pointed toe….then these may be the best shoes for you.  They come in some lovely neutrals, but my personal favorite? The leopard print.

Rothy’s The Loafer: A great loafer is perfect for every wardrobe, and these are no exception.  They’re classic, fun and come in a great set of prints and colors.

Rothy’s The Driver: These are a newer addition to the Rothy’s shoes line up, and the ones that I’m eyeing.  I love love love their style.  Driver shoes are a classic style, and I love the idea that I can wear these in fun colors to add a little pizazz to a traditional shoe.

Rothy’s The Square: Another version of the flat? These ballet flats come with with a stylish square toe (they come in some really fun colors and combinations like the tuxedo that really plays up on the shape of the flat).

Rothy’s Mary Jane: If you’re looking for a pair of shoes inspired by classic mary janes…..these grown up ones come in two styles…..one style comes with a square toe and the other option has a round toe with a bow on the top of the foot (I’m personally partial to this one, it’s so cute)!

The Sneaker: The slip on sneaker style is the first pair of Rothy’s I ordered and love.  They come in whole sizes and a half size option.  I ordered my regular shoe size, and they were a perfect fit (they do have free shipping and free returns if you misjudge the sizing).

The Lace Up: Another great sneaker option? Rothy’s recently added another sneaker option….with traditional laces.  It comes in a ton of neutral colors, so is perfect for basic daily wear.

Rothy’s The Ankle Boot: If you want a boot in the same knit upper fabric as Rothy’s other shoes, then these popular Ankle Boots might be for you (warning they sell out quickly, so grab your size when you see them).

The Chelsea: The Chelsea boots are more of a sneaker boot, and more casual (they have a light sole like a sneaker).  I love that they give you a bit of an elevated vibe and are as comfortable as can be.

Rothy’s Review : Are They REALLY Machine Washable?

My biggest question……are these REALLY washable? Because one of the things that attracted me to Rothy’s was that I could wash them and wear with them looking as good as new.

I dove straight in with my Rothy’s sneakers.  I wore them for an entire weekend trip to Disneyland with Lydia.  And yes, they got fairly dirty the first day of wear(heavy use will do that to a pair of shoes).  In fact, I was sort of questioning my decision midway through the weekend.  These shoes weren’t cheap….did I ruin them immediately?

I came home from our weekend, and decided to follow the instructions EXACTLY.  I took out the removable insole first, and I used a stain treatment on the spots I was worried might have stained (this one to be exact).  Then I washed both the insoles and the shoes in cold water in the washing machine (using a regular mild detergent).  No hot water, and no dryer.  I put balled up socks into the toe box to help my shoes hold their shape and left them to air dry for about 24 hours after washing.  And guess what? As good as new!
