Planning a trip to Legoland? There are a ton of fun things to do including legoland minifigure trading (which is a ton of fun and a great add on to rides, characters, and entertainment).
We just got home from a visit to the legoland california resort . Our family stayed at the legoland hotel (the legoland castle hotel to be specific) and spent two full days totally immersed in all things brick and lego minifigure related. We had a total blast, and one of the things my daughter loved the most? We did a ton of legoland minifigure trading. For the record, while we did this in California you can also participate at legoland florida or the legoland new york resort or any legoland discovery center .
Whether you are visiting legoland for the day or doing a longer hotel stay …… it's always fun to have activities that you can utilize throughout the experience. For us? This fun activity was a total hit with the little kids and the grown ups in our party. It's easy to prepare, doesn't cost a dime, and creates a perfect souvenir to bring home.
Legoland Minifigure Trading
Since its opening, Legoland at all it's locations has been filled with fun rides and immersive experiences. And one of the best things to do inside Legoland? Minifigure trading. This exciting activity allows visitors to trade for rare and coveted Lego minifigures, and is a super fun way to be a part of the overall Legoland community inside the park and at the themed hotels at each location.
Legoland Minifigure Trading: A Brief History
The practice of minifigure trading began in the Legoland theme park as a way to encourage interaction and engagement among visitors. It started in 2010, starting with the san diego park (that's our local LEGOLAND) and then expanded to other Legoland locations worldwide. You can even trade at legoland japan now!
Trading was inspired by the popularity of collecting Lego minifigures and minifigure blind bags at home. The trading program introduced a fun new dimension to the Legoland experience, and it's SUCH a great idea! The goal? To encourage lego fans to swap figures, complete sets, and to find rare and elusive new minifigure options for their own collections.
Legoland Minifigure Trading: The Rules of the Trade:
Participating in Legoland minifigure trading is a pretty straightforward process. Visitors can bring their own minifigures from home or purchase them at the park to trade with Model Citizens (Legoland staff member) and fellow brick fan and minifig collectors. Each participant is allowed to trade a maximum of three figures per Model Citizen, per day.
The search for unique minifigures often involves trading figures of equal or similar value, meaning…..you trade a minifigure you own for one on display. However, every now and again there are special events or promotions where certain figures have increased value or exclusivity. I've seen special holiday minifigures or unique characters on display.
Legoland Minifigure Trading: Where To Do It
The allure of minifigure trading lies in the excitement of the hunt (trust me, it's a little addictive). Legoland parks are filled with trading stations, where Model Citizens proudly display their assortment of minifigures. As visitors explore the park, they can engage in friendly conversations, discover hidden trading spots, and unravel the secrets of finding rare and sought-after figures. I saw trading stations inside the hotels, in stores, and in build areas. In fact, anywhere you see employee brick badges with a minifigure on them……you know there is a trading option.
Legoland Minifigure Trading : The Joys of Collecting
We had a ton of fun searching for trading spots, and then deciding if we were ready to give up any of the minifigures we brought along.
Beyond the fun of it all, Legoland minifigure trading also serves as a valuable educational tool for kids. It fosters social skills, decision-making, and resource management as they navigate the intricate world of trading.
I love that it encouraged the kids to approach employees and to REALLY ponder the variety of minifigures they found.
A few tips to prepare for trading:
- plan in advance, we decided that 4 minifigures felt like a good amount to bring and trade so we went through the ones we had at home and selected 4 that we were ready to part with (you can also buy them inside Legoland, there is a minifigure market that has them and they're available in MOST stores)
- you'll need an easy way to carry them (at a friend's suggestion, we used these play cubes to carry ours and it was perfect for the kids to open and access on their own)
Shop Carrying Cases:
Legoland minifigure trading is a super simple and fun activity that adds a new layer to the Legoland experience. Whether you are a lifelong collector or new to the world of Lego, participating in minifigure trading at Legoland is a really fun way to engage with the parks and resorts.
So, the next time you visit a Legoland park, now you can be a minifigure collecting pro! Are you going to try legoland minifigure trading during YOUR next trip?
