Disney fans are eagerly awaiting the much anticipated release of the new Little Mermaid film.  This? Is a little sneak peek into the disney little mermaid characters …..who they are (who ISN'T present in the live-action version ) , and why they are such a significant part of the beloved story of ariel and the upcoming film.

disney little mermaid characters

Ok original animated film fans…….the time is almost here, the disney’s the little mermaid live-action remake is releasing VERY soon. Like so many of you, I grew up seeing the original film in movie theaters and have been trying to learn AS much as I can about the live action version. Now, let's be honest….there has been VERY little information about which disney little mermaid characters would be present in the new film (aside from the obvious young mermaid , dashing prince eric and well known main characters )…..so when I had the opportunity to sit down with the cast and creators of the film? I took the opportunity to learn as much as I could about the film and what the disney little mermaid characters mean to these talented creatives.

Disney little mermaid characters : who are they?

One of the most interesting things about this amazing cast? It's a combination of voicing CGI and animated characters and then live action cast members. I love that we have both in this film.

Returning Characters : Live Action

Ariel (played by actress halle bailey ) : the heroine of our story is none other than the youngest daughter of the Sea King, and she is definitely an endearing main character. Ariel craves adventure, worlds beyond the ocean that she knows, and…..she makes it happen. Just like in the original film, princess ariel ‘s siren song and golden singing voice are a huge part of this story…so trust, you'll hear halle singing some of those most memorable songs from the beloved disney classic .

disney little mermaid characters : ariel

Eric (played by jonah hauer-king ) : Just like in the animated film, Ariel's true love interest? The adventurous prince Eric. She initially encounters him as he serves as the head sailor on a voyage through her father's waters and….the rest is history. When Ariel imagines being a part of the human world , prince eric's palace is the center of that dream.

King Triton (played by javier bardem ) : the head of the royal family under the sea is none other than the gruff, strict and totally loveable king triton himself. Javier Bardem plays this overprotective father and images we've seen so far? AMAZING.

Ursula (played by melissa mccarthy ) : can you think of anyone better than melissa mccarthy to play the evil sea witch ? Just like her role in the original disney film , ursula will be the villain who tempts Ariel with the possibility of human legs and a life with her human prince.

Returning disney little mermaid characters : Voice Characters

Flounder (voiced by jacob tremblay ): ariel's best friend is an important part of original movie and he's sure to be an important part of this version. The voice of flounder is none other than Jacob Tremblay (who voiced Luca in the recent animated film).

Sebastian (voiced by daveed diggs ): I can't imagine a better choice to play the voice of sebastian than the incomparable daveed diggs . The Hamilton alumni is perfect to play the anxious crab and to truly tap into sebastian's emotional range and his nuanced experience.

disney little mermaid characters : scuttle

Scuttle (voiced by Awkwafina ): Awkwafina is not a newbie to voicing Disney characters (she also voiced Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon ). To say that she has good comedic timing is an understatement. Her talents will bring a whole new amount of fun to scuttle's eccentricities and entertaining personality.

New disney little mermaid characters

Queen Selina ( played by noma dumezweni ): When the disney little mermaid characters and cast were announced, there were lots of questions around Queen Selina…..an all new character. Queen Selina is Prince Eric's mother and an important character in the film.

In the new film, we also see all of king triton’s daughters in a new way. We DON'T see chef louis at all.

Why are the disney little mermaid characters and casting important to the Cast and Creators?

Now, y'all know how strongly I feel about representation in film and children's entertainment. You also know I love a Disney classic. I loved hearing WHY the disney little mermaid characters and casting choices are important to the amazing people who created this film during a recent press junket.

“I mean, I think that like you said, I think it reflects the world we live in. And I think that everyone deserves to see themselves on screen.” – Awkwafina

disney little mermaid characters

“I stood in line to see the Little Mermaid opening night in Oakland, like, you know, when it first came out. That was, it was just this moment of oh, yeah, this thing that was sort of a fundamental part of my childhood.” – daveed diggs

“And personally, I appreciate you all giving us something in this day and age that we can all identify with, that we can all see ourselves in, no matter what. Last night, Anika Noni Rose said to me, “This movie looks like the sea.” -Nischelle Turner

🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀ ⠀ Thi 🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀⠀This weekend we flew to Sacramento and then road tripped north to see my family up in the mountains. It was so much fun to spend time together, and it reminded me….we are ALL one of these people on a toad trip.⠀⠀Bonus points to the VERY nice road trip vehicle we had…..the team at @MazdaUSA lent us a 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus and it was AMAZING (it even had a wireless charging dock for our phones). It made my snack stops even better (yup, we tried Dutch Bros for the first time and OMG we need them to expand to more Southern California locations ASAP).⠀⠀So, which are person are YOU on a road trip? ⠀⠀#familytravel #drivemazda
….and also why are we commenting negatively abou ….and also why are we commenting negatively about people’s appearances in 2023?Double also: if the worst thing people on the interwebs can say about me is that they don’t like my smile…..then I feel pretty good about what type of person I’ve chosen to be.
💕Because we all want our kids to soar………⠀⠀So fitting right? Elvis named this plane after his daughter. And all I’ve been thinking about throughout our St Jude experience…..is how certain things truly bond all of us. Certain things cross economic barriers and continent and language differences. Parenthood is one of those. It’s a universal experience. And I think whether we are parents or role models or aunties or friends……we all know what it’s like to dream and hope on behalf of a child in your life.⠀⠀In 2012, when I was newly married and not yet a parent one of my students was diagnosed with cancer. Without revealing details about her or her family, I think it’s important to recognize that economic barriers prevented what should have been an earlier diagnosis. It was one of many times I was reminded during my time with the amazing humans in my classrooms that…..we do NOT all have the same access or experiences in life. That student and her family were one of the miracle stories. In fact, when she came back to class, she complained about missing soccer games at recess and fell right back in with the rest in a way that to this day brings joyful tears to my eyes. ⠀⠀I said this on my stories during my trip, but…..I didn’t realize until this experience that families at St Jude NEVER receive a bill. Ever. No matter what. That this access gives families hope during their darkest days.⠀⠀I’m going to be teaming up with St. Jude to do a fun challenge that will hopefully inspire y’all to support them too. Let’s just say that…..for this scared of heights, refuses to take my feet off the ground theme park girlie……I’m going to making the ultimate sacrifices.⠀⠀What rides would you want to see me go on in support of St Jude? (be kind, I’m literally TERRIFIED of any and all rides that have a height limit). You know they REALLY moved me if I’m even thinking of doing this! ⠀⠀@stjude #stjudeambassador
💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is fam 💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is famous for…..so many of you guessed it in stories last night!🦆The Peabody Hotel is famous for their duck parade. And we got to see it as a part of Day 1 of the St Jude Content Creator Summit. I’m in Memphis to learn all about how St Jude is doing life saving research to fight and cure childhood cancers.💕Real talk: I get to do a lot of fun things because of this little app but projects like this? Are an absolute honor. Did you know that patients at St Jude NEVER RECEIVE A BILL? What a gift to families in crisis. I’m so happy to share this next couple of days here in Memphis with y’all and to support such an important organization.🦆Now, swipe to see the ducks. @stjude #stjudeambassador
She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This s She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This stunning movie shows a princess who is absolutely……royal. Graceful. Brave and……the perfect mermaid. Years ago, I was sitting in the theater during the live action Lion King premiere just days after the Little Mermaid casting was announced. And in walked Halle Bailey. This young girl and all I could think was……how much weight of the world was on her shoulders. The room paused. And people everywhere stood. They applauded her and smiled and I thought…..she really is a princess. Halle, you are the epitome of royalty. Thank you for sharing your shine with the world.I would love to encourage you to follow these amazing creators who have been shining themselves and sharing a ton of special Little Mermaid experiences:@jenniferborget @erikaenchanted@davidvaughn@_the_adventurous_rjay@colormemagic@melizzablackLydia’s, Robbie’s and my full review of the film will be on the blog Monday morning. How excited are you for the film?
