We are a Mary Poppins obsessed family. The original movie is in regular rotation for our family movie nights, we even dressed up as the original Mary and Bert for Halloween this year. From the music to the whimsical story line to the amazing dance sequences……we love love love Mary Poppins and were waiting with eager anticipation for the release of Mary Poppins Returns. I’m not going to lie, I was WORRIED before we saw it. Would it live up to our expectations? Disney wasn’t going to RUIN Mary Poppins, RIGHT?
Well, rest assured. We saw it. We loved it. And I wanted to share EXACTLY what you need to know before taking your family to see the film.
Mary Poppins Returns: A Full Family Review
What to Do BEFORE Seeing Mary Poppins Returns: If your family has not recently seen the ORIGINAL Mary Poppins film, I would highly suggest watching it again before heading the theatre. It’s not a requirement, Mary Poppins Returns is a stand alone story…..but it really enriches the experience. Lydia loved noticing the nods to the original throughout the film and it’s definitely fun to spot characters who make an appearance in both films!

“I loved loved loved the dance sequences. If you’re a fan of Broadway musicals, and the musical movies that we just don’t get very often anymore….this will make your year. They are absolutely magical!” – Carly

Be Aware Of:
Depending on you viewpoint, there is ONE song that may be a little mature. There is a scene where Mary Poppins performs a silly, broadway-esque song. I found it quirky and funny, however she does sing about a woman wearing nothing but a leaf. If that’s something you feel uncomfortable with, it’s a perfect time for a quick bathroom break.
My Thought on the Film as a Whole: Mary Poppins Returns is a must see. From the soundtrack to the storyline…..it’s going to steal your heart (and you’ll have the songs stuck in your head for weeks). I can GUARANTEE your children will love it, and I can also guarantee it will win a TON of awards this year. We’re seeing it again tonight, and I can’t wait to have it in our personal film library!
