Planning a movie themed birthday  party? We just celebrated our daughter turning 8 with a small at home film themed birthday party, and we're sharing all the details!

Let's be honest, birthday parties can be a little……stressful and it's been a BIT since we planned one.    When we moved to San Diego Lydia was in kindergarten.  At that point, we'd had a birthday party when she turned one, and most years after that….we'd done a Disneyland Birthday as a family instead of a party.  So that year? I might have been a little over the top, we invited the entire kindergarten class to a crafting at Michaels Birthday Party.  Now, we all know what happened.  So clearly, we didn't have a birthday party last year.  But this year? We decided to do a VERY small party with two families at home.  This was the perfect, low key way to hang out.  Since we planned on the kids watching a film, it made total sense to do a movie themed birthday party.

My goal? Simple.  Fun for the kids and parents and easy to set up and take down.

Lydia's Movie Themed Birthday Party

Let's be honest, at home parties can be overwhelming.  You want your home to look great, you spend time setting up and it can be easy to go over the top.  But this? The set up was super easy, and our food was even easier.  This was a ton of fun, without total stress (a birthday party win, right?)

We planned for the party to last from about 12 pm to 3 pm and invited the kids to come in pajamas (that was Lydia's idea, but seemed totally fitting for a movie themed birthday party).

Movie Themed Birthday Party Menu:

We set up an easy lunch buffet with pizza, movie popcorn, movie candy treats, sliced fruit and salad and a mimosa bar for the grown ups.  All of it was easy to pick and set up in advance, so I could actually enjoy time with the adults and not worry about food prepping.

And for dessert? We got the most amazing cake made by an amazing local baker (Occasion-All Cakes here in San Diego).

Movie Themed Birthday Party Decorations:

The key to these fun decorations? A red carpet and a few film related items.  We got some fun film strip table runners, a now showing sign so that we could announce the movie the kids would be watching, a REALLY cute birthday banner, and a clapboard that the kids LOVED.

The red carpet was perfect for one use.  You could also use red butcher paper or red fabric, whatever is easiest!

Movie Themed Birthday Party Activities:

This? Was the easiest part of the party.  Lydia picked a movie to screen with her friends (we watched the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid , which is about an hour long….so the perfect amount of time).  Other than that? The kids played, we ate lunch and the parents got a chance to catch up.  It was LOVELY and easy.

My biggest movie themed birthday party tip? Have fun, and pick a great movie to watch all together!

🎉HAPPY REOPENING DAY TOONTOWN!!!!!🎉⠀ ⠀ W 🎉HAPPY REOPENING DAY TOONTOWN!!!!!🎉⠀⠀We loved visiting yesterday for a preview of this reimagined area. It’s absolutely perfect for getting your wiggles out, having a picnic and yup……..getting your Disney feels fix.⠀⠀My top recommendations when visiting this new area?⠀⠀1) mobile order from Cafe Daisy…..we loved the pizza options and the cold brew⠀2) play play play in Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard, and inside his house…..⠀3) take the time to walk through Minnie and Mickey’s houses, you’ll probably see a surprise friend or two!⠀4) absolutely yes to the picnic basket from Good Boy! Grocer. It’s a STELLAR price and a really fun experience to pick out your own snacks.⠀5) Mickey’s and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a perfect full family ride. I’d suggest trying for this earlier in the day if you can.⠀6) Keep an eye out for Pete, it’s so much fun to see him wandering the area.⠀⠀#Disneyland #Toontown #Mickey #Minnie #MMRR @disneyland @disneyparks invited guest
✨There’s something in my eye…….oh it’s j ✨There’s something in my eye…….oh it’s just pixie dust.⠀⠀When I think of Lydia’s earliest visits to Disneyland….I think of Toontown. I think of Minnie’s House and meeting Mickey and playing next to Goofy’s House. I think of the adorable landscape and the magic that the area creates for the youngest and the young at heart.⠀⠀✨Today we visited Toontown for a sneak peek before it’s reopening tomorrow…..and yup, that pixie dust definitely got in my eye. More than once.⠀⠀Toontown is even more magical than it was (partially thanks to the addition of a cold brew on the menu at Cafe Daisy (good call Disney food and beverage team). ⠀⠀✨My favorite moments from today’s sneak preview?⠀1️⃣ we saw Pete. He’s even better than I’d hoped.2️⃣ I love love love the food options in Toontown! Highlights: the picnic basket snack option Good Boy! Grocers, the cold brew and a delicious gluten free fold over pizza (regular looked great too)3️⃣ the new play areas are amazing! Goofy’s How to Play Area is phenomenal and filled with a ton of new interactions. ⠀Happy reopening Toontown. Can’t wait to see you again real soon. ⠀⠀Have you visited Toontown? There are people cheering you on…..and you don’t even realize it.I learned a LOT during the 7 months of training for this race. I learned that I should stretch and warm up (thanks pulled muscle for that life lesson), I learned that small progress over time leads to achieving big goals. I learned that sunshine and being outside makes me a happier person. I learned that I’m more of an athlete than I thought I was. But most of all? I learned……there are a whole lot of people in your cheering section and you might not even know they’re sitting there. After I pulled this muscle, I was amazed by the sweet and kind messages while I tried to prepare to run my first 10k with an injury. But NOTHING prepared me for the ovwhelming amount of kindness and support that flooded into my inbox when I crossed the finish line. From the early morning you can do this messages to the ones that came in throughout the race to the inspiring amount of support as I iced my pulled muscle…..it brought me to tears. And the amazing thing? When Jennifer and Lashawn and I found each other at the finish line….they said the same thing. It’s not just me. We all have a cheering section. And wow, do they show up when you may not be expecting them.Got a big goal? Working on something new? Share it in the comments. I’d love to join your support team.#medalmonday #rundisney
