Thank you to the Mission Bay Resort for hosting our stay.

Planning a stay at the Mission Bay Resort? This is everything you need to know for a San Diego family staycation!

Back to reality! We just got back from a really fun San Diego staycation at the Mission Bay Resort.  We did something a little different for this trip, since Robbie was already back to work for the school year…..we made it a three generations trip with Lydia, my mom and I.  And spoiler? We're already planning to go back to the Mission Bay Resort to do this again next year, we LOVED IT!

Mission Bay Resort is a relaxed, enjoy the endless summer, family friendly property nestled into the protected Mission Bay neighborhood of San Diego proper.  The resort is divided into a number of smaller buildings and is easily walkable.  They have a gym, pools, tennis courts, volleyball, multiple dining options, and beach access to the Bay (perfect for younger kids).

My overall reaction to this property? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS WAS HERE IN SAN DIEGO? I absolutely loved this unique, beachy property and can't wait to return.  In fact, while visiting I learned that they have resort memberships for locals and am seriously considering one for next summer.

Mission Bay Resort: A Family Staycation Guide

Planning a trip to the Mission Bay Resort? I wanted to share our favorite activities and don't miss spots.

Pro tip: when booking?  We loved having a bay front room.  We could literally open our patio door and WALK down the lawn and onto the sand.  Lydia loved walking out in the morning to hunt for shells, and I can't imagine a better place to sip my first cup of coffee.  That room location made the trip even more magical.

Mission Bay Resort: Dining

The Mission Bay Resort has four dining options on property and we tried them all.  I loved each for different reasons….and if you have time, highly recommend trying each during your visit!

  1. Covewood: Covewood is the “fanciest” dining experience on property.  We actually ended up eating at Covewood three times (once for brunch and twice for dinner).  The service is stellar, and the views from the outdoor dining area? Time your meal with sunset if you can.  It's amazing!  We loved the fish options they had, and parents? Don't worry, there is a great kids menu with a ton of options.
  2. Plaza Del Sol: Looking for a fun and casual alfresco dining option? Plaza del Sol is a bar with live music, a great outdoor space and a simple pizza and small bites menu.  We loved the music, and it was perfect for a quick late lunch.
  3. Solrisa: One of your questions…..is there a pool side bar? Why YES THERE IS.  Solrisa serves tacos, burgers, and simple vacation food and is housed in the pool area.  There are tables to eat at or you can have your food served by the pool on lounge chairs (fair warning, use the food cover they provide, a seagull snagged our fries)!
  4. Mission Joe: Now, y'all know I'm a BIG coffee person.  So you'd better believe I checked out Mission Joe, Mission Bay Resort's onsite coffee shop.  Multiple times.  They make great  coffee drinks, have a killer drip coffee, and have simple grab and go breakfast options (Lydia loved the pastries).  Warning: while we were there, Mission Joe was only open from 7 am to 1 pm….so plan accordingly!

Mission Bay Resort: Activities

I love that Mission Bay Resort had a ton of on property activities.  It felt like the perfect combination of a relaxed vacation and activity filled days.  These? Our favorite on property activities:

Planning a stay at the Mission Bay Resort? This is everything you need to know for a San Diego family staycation!

  1. Pool and Hot Tub: Plan at least a full afternoon in the Mission Bay Resort pool area.  There are two hot tubs, a large pool, a splash pad, tons of outdoor games, and the perfect amount of palm trees.
  2. Shell Hunting: The Mission Bay shores have more shells than I've seen on a beach in a LONG time.  We loved walking along the sand and collect the best ones.  This was a perfect morning or early afternoon activity.
  3. Bike Rides: Yes, we rented a surrey bike.  It cost $30 for an hour and was totally worth it (in fact, Lydia says it was her favorite part of the staycation).  You can also rent beach cruisers (they have kids' bikes too) along with jet skiis and powerboats and sailboats.
  4. Scavenger Hunt: Be sure to check the schedule that the resort puts out each day, because there are always fun activities.  We did a great nighttime scavenger hunt and Lydia LOVED IT!
  5. S'mores: There are fire pits ALL over the property (you can even book a room with a private firepit if you'd like).  Be sure to make some time to do s'mores……we made ours the last night of our trip and had a blast!

Bonus for the Mission Bay Resort? It's close to Seaworld, the San Diego Zoo, Liberty Station and Balboa Park.  So many things to check off a San Diego Bucketlist during your stay!

🎃unpopular opinion: You don’t have to do Oogi 🎃unpopular opinion: You don’t have to do Oogie Boogie Bash to have the perfect spooky season day at Disneyland⠀⠀🎃Now, here’s the thing: I love Oogie Boogie Bash. But it sells out SO quickly every year. And I promise, there is still a LOT of Halloween Time fun at Disneyland (yes even without an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket). I’ve been hopping around the parks with Undercover Tourist and we’ve had a TOTAL blast doing all the spooky things together.⠀⠀A few of my favorite Halloweenie things to do during a parks day (or night):⠀🖤visit the Halloween Tree (IYKYK)⠀🧡watch the Dapper Dans sing all their cutesiest spookiest songs⠀🖤check out the Dia de los Muertos area in Frontierland AND the performances in Paradise Guardians (check for the Mariachi Divas in the app….they’re AMAZING)⠀🧡try at least one new to me spooky treat (yup, that includes my seasonal cold brews and this year’s Minnie Bat Caramel Apple)⠀🖤do alllll the themed attractions, each of these does something special for Halloweentime: Luigi's Honkin' Haul-O-Ween, Monsters After Dark, Mater's Graveyard JamBOOree and…..our fav the Haunted Mansion ⠀🧡do Pumpkin Pursuit at Downtown Disney ⠀🖤the new Goofy’s Kitchen Halloween Dinner and Brunch (we loved the dinner over the weekend and I’m sharing the brunch in stories today!)⠀⠀🎃My friends at Undercover Tourist have some pretty awesome guides to Halloweentime on their site……they’re a great spooky season resource for info and a great deals on Disney tickets resource year round. I know, I rave about them a lot but……who doesn’t love a Disney partner that gives you deals on trips to the Happiest Place on Earth for ANY holiday or season?⠀⠀#FrogHopDLR #Disneyland#DisneylandResort #Halloweentime @themeparkfrog @disneyland⠀⠀⠀

🚨 3 MISTAKES I MADE AT MY FIRST RUN DISNEY RACE 🚨 3 MISTAKES I MADE AT MY FIRST RUN DISNEY RACE 🚨⠀⠀🛑 Learn from my mistakes, 3 things you should NOT do if you’re running Disney races this year (trust me):⠀⠀1️⃣ Passing Go and Heading STRAIGHT to the parks: I realllllyyyyy wanted medal pictures. In my running outfit. So, instead of taking the buses straight from the finish line back to the hotel……we went to the Magic Kingdom. Took photos. Went to lunch. And felt…..terrible by about 1 pm. So take it from me, finish the race. Go to the hotel. Shower. Take a nap. THEN go to the parks. ⠀2️⃣ Breakfast: ok, mistake number 2. WHAT WE ATE. We booked a very cute, very on theme lunch. It was also very rich and creamy food. And…..was NOT IT after a race. Some of us may have gotten sick. It might have been the food. Or the lack of sleep. But, breakfast food (waffles / eggs) would have been a MUCH better choice. Now bonus points if you can guess where we ate. Love it, but….not for the first meal after the race.⠀3️⃣ Park Tickets: I spent WAY too much. I didn’t buy my park tickets in advance and paid full price. On a race weekend, you’ll probably want tickets for race day and the day after if not two days after. So….buy them NOW. While you can get a deal. ⠀⠀🎟️ Which leads to……when I say buy those park tickets now, I mean it. Big News! Undercover Tourist is offering their best ticket deal at BOTH Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort…for a VERY limited time, get Adult Theme Park Tickets at Child Prices. So whichever race you are running (or races in my case)……snag tickets NOW. I’m grabbing mine for Wine and Dine and Princess weekend……..⠀🎟️ want a link to the deal? Comment TICKETS PLEASE and I’ll send it your way! ⠀👟 Are you running a Disney Race this year? Which one? ⠀⠀🥇 And if you’re an experienced Run Disney person….what tips do YOU have for first timers?⠀⠀@themeparkfrog @disneyland #FrogHopDLR #rundisney

Two good witches and one black cat…….kick off Two good witches and one black cat…….kick off another year of family halloween costumes. The thing is, I tried to talk Lydia out of these costumes. It was a cooler day on Saturday and I kept telling her we could just wear jeans and the hats. Until, I realized…….we may not have that many Halloween seasons left of cute family costumes. So pink witches we were…..for the kickoff of Legoland’s Brick or Treat. We love Brick or Treat (this is our 3rd year doing it). It’s got some new activities this year, and I L-O-V-E that it’s included in your regular @legolandcalifornia ticket (bonus it ALSO will be included in Kids Free October here in SD).Our favs this year:- the wacky witch trail near the water park entrance- the zombie cheerleaders- halloween themed apple fries- the monster security checkpoint- Jam Out with the Rockers (this meet and greet is HYSTERICAL, scroll for the footage)Brick or Treat takes place on Saturdays in September and then Saturdays and SOME Sundays in October (dates are on the Legoland website).Welp, this makes it official.
