Disney Cruise: A Family Review of the DVC Member Cruise

We recently sailed away on our very first Disney Cruise, the Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise…….and we're sharing our favorite parts for adults (and kids).

Thanks to Disney Vacation Club for providing this vacation to my family for free. All opinions are my own.

Disney Cruise: This family review will give you a TON of important info! Are you a cruise family?  Before this summer, none of us had ever been on a cruise ship.  Well, the minute everyone heard we were going on a Disney Cruise……I got them same reaction.  “You'll be sold, and cruise Disney forever.”  Needless to say, our family was pretty excited for this magical experience.  We flew into Orlando two days early, and kicked off the magical adventure with two days at Walt Disney World (we stayed at the Art of Animation and the Copper Creek Villas).  We'd never been to Disney World, so this trip? Was a big one for us all…..I'm a little embarrassed to admit I spent a month planning what to pack for a Disney Cruise.

Disney Cruise: A Family Review of the DVC Member Cruise

Spoiler alert: WE LOVED IT.  This was literally the PERFECT Disney Cruise to start with.  The Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise is the ultimate cruise for Disney fans.  The Disney Vacation Club spends all year arranging special programming that is offered ONLY on their Member Cruise.  From presentations by Disney artists to TWO days at Castaway Cay…..the programming was phenomenal (you can see more about the amazing Disney Vacation Club agenda and special experiences in our article for Disney Family HERE).

I wanted to share the top four things I'd known before heading on our first (and definitely not our last) Disney Cruise.

Even the shyest child will LOVE the Oceaneers Club: I got a lot of questions about how we prepared Lydia for the kids club.  The Oceaneers Club and the Oceaneers Lab are the children's areas for Lydia's age on any Disney Cruise (she's 4 1/2).  I'm not going to lie, I was a little apprehensive about her willingness to GO.  Well, I can admit how wrong I was.  By the time we got to our second day on the ship……she told us to “leave her in the Oceaneers Club all day”.  You have to laugh, she'd even memorized the hours it was open.  As a teacher, I was extremely impressed with both the Club and the Lab.  They were beautiful environments (all Disney themed of course — my favorite was Andy's room from Toy Story), with a great variety of activities.  From character story times to art projects……there were wonderful options for the children to choose from.  Since the Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise has a TON of special programming, I was really excited to attend some of it while Lydia played in her new favorite place.  From hearing Disney composer Michael Giacchino speak to learning all about Ralph Breaks the Internet, I love that the Oceaneers Club gave us the option to enjoy a little adult time on our Disney Cruise.

Disney Cruise: This family review will give you a TON of important info and all your must do activities!

Castaway Cay Might Be Heaven on Earth: My version of heaven involves blue water and unlimited ice cream.  Add in Disney Magic, and you've got Castaway Cay.  From character meet and greets to the famous 5k……there is a TON to do!

Character Magic is Real, and So Is the Magic of Disney Customer Service: You'd think that Lydia would be sort of immune to the magic of the character meet and greet (I mean, we're annual passholders and visit Disneyland all the time)…..but somehow, the characters were even MORE magical on the Disney Cruise ship.  We did a special meet and greet with Anna and Elsa, and she was OVER THE MOON.  The Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise also kicked off the 90th Birthday of both Minnie and Mickey with a special Member Mouse Party (read more about that HERE).  But want to know what amazed me? The phenomenal customer service.  We rotated different dining locations each night (between the Royal Palace, Animator's Palate, and the Enchanted Garden)…..and our servers rotated with us.  Each night they remembered what we'd ordered the night before, and Lydia loved seeing them each evening and updating them about her day.  They were fabulous, and added an extra layer of Disney magic to the whole experience.

Disney Cruise: This family review will give you a TON of important info -- especially about the kids' club)!

Adult Programming Is a Must Do: From the Beauty and the Beast show to the D'Cappella performances (a special feature of the Member Cruise) to the amazing Disney Broadway Stars performance (also a special Member Cruise only show)……the shows and performances were top notch.  Be sure to make time to attend one (or all) of them.  Lydia loved seeing Beauty and the Beast with us, it's definitely appropriate for preschoolers, especially princess fans.

If your family is considering a Disney Cruise, I HIGHLY recommend it…..and my top suggestion? The Disney Vacation Club Member Cruise is phenomenal and truly elevates the experience.

In 2019 there will be TWO Disney Vacation Club Member Cruises.

The Disney Wonder will sail from San Diego for five nights, stopping in San Francisco and  Victoria, British Columbia before disembarking in Vancouver in May.

The Disney Magic will sail from New York City for seven nights, stopping in Boston and enjoying a two-day visit in Bermuda before returning to New York in October.

🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀ ⠀ Thi 🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀⠀This weekend we flew to Sacramento and then road tripped north to see my family up in the mountains. It was so much fun to spend time together, and it reminded me….we are ALL one of these people on a toad trip.⠀⠀Bonus points to the VERY nice road trip vehicle we had…..the team at @MazdaUSA lent us a 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus and it was AMAZING (it even had a wireless charging dock for our phones). It made my snack stops even better (yup, we tried Dutch Bros for the first time and OMG we need them to expand to more Southern California locations ASAP).⠀⠀So, which are person are YOU on a road trip? ⠀⠀#familytravel #drivemazda
….and also why are we commenting negatively abou ….and also why are we commenting negatively about people’s appearances in 2023?Double also: if the worst thing people on the interwebs can say about me is that they don’t like my smile…..then I feel pretty good about what type of person I’ve chosen to be.
💕Because we all want our kids to soar………⠀⠀So fitting right? Elvis named this plane after his daughter. And all I’ve been thinking about throughout our St Jude experience…..is how certain things truly bond all of us. Certain things cross economic barriers and continent and language differences. Parenthood is one of those. It’s a universal experience. And I think whether we are parents or role models or aunties or friends……we all know what it’s like to dream and hope on behalf of a child in your life.⠀⠀In 2012, when I was newly married and not yet a parent one of my students was diagnosed with cancer. Without revealing details about her or her family, I think it’s important to recognize that economic barriers prevented what should have been an earlier diagnosis. It was one of many times I was reminded during my time with the amazing humans in my classrooms that…..we do NOT all have the same access or experiences in life. That student and her family were one of the miracle stories. In fact, when she came back to class, she complained about missing soccer games at recess and fell right back in with the rest in a way that to this day brings joyful tears to my eyes. ⠀⠀I said this on my stories during my trip, but…..I didn’t realize until this experience that families at St Jude NEVER receive a bill. Ever. No matter what. That this access gives families hope during their darkest days.⠀⠀I’m going to be teaming up with St. Jude to do a fun challenge that will hopefully inspire y’all to support them too. Let’s just say that…..for this scared of heights, refuses to take my feet off the ground theme park girlie……I’m going to making the ultimate sacrifices.⠀⠀What rides would you want to see me go on in support of St Jude? (be kind, I’m literally TERRIFIED of any and all rides that have a height limit). You know they REALLY moved me if I’m even thinking of doing this! ⠀⠀@stjude #stjudeambassador
💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is fam 💕Double tap if you know what the Peabody is famous for…..so many of you guessed it in stories last night!🦆The Peabody Hotel is famous for their duck parade. And we got to see it as a part of Day 1 of the St Jude Content Creator Summit. I’m in Memphis to learn all about how St Jude is doing life saving research to fight and cure childhood cancers.💕Real talk: I get to do a lot of fun things because of this little app but projects like this? Are an absolute honor. Did you know that patients at St Jude NEVER RECEIVE A BILL? What a gift to families in crisis. I’m so happy to share this next couple of days here in Memphis with y’all and to support such an important organization.🦆Now, swipe to see the ducks. @stjude #stjudeambassador
She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This s She IS Ariel. We saw it. It’s a gift. This stunning movie shows a princess who is absolutely……royal. Graceful. Brave and……the perfect mermaid. Years ago, I was sitting in the theater during the live action Lion King premiere just days after the Little Mermaid casting was announced. And in walked Halle Bailey. This young girl and all I could think was……how much weight of the world was on her shoulders. The room paused. And people everywhere stood. They applauded her and smiled and I thought…..she really is a princess. Halle, you are the epitome of royalty. Thank you for sharing your shine with the world.I would love to encourage you to follow these amazing creators who have been shining themselves and sharing a ton of special Little Mermaid experiences:@jenniferborget @erikaenchanted@davidvaughn@_the_adventurous_rjay@colormemagic@melizzablackLydia’s, Robbie’s and my full review of the film will be on the blog Monday morning. How excited are you for the film? Who is your favorite Little Mermaid character? #littlemermaid #colormemermaid #ariel
