There’s something about the magic of Disney. I remember watching movies each Sunday night with my family growing up, and getting giddy when that famous castle flashed across the screen. So when we were given the opportunity to screen Pete’s Dragon on the Disney lot, attend a press junket to learn behind the scenes secrets about the film, AND to talk about how to Disney Bound……who turns that down?
If you loved the original Pete’s Dragon as much as I did, then you’re going to LOVE hearing about the 2016 Pete’s Dragon. At the junket, I listened carefully as the cast and crew shared their favorite parts about making the film.
Pete’s Dragon: Behind the Scenes
Before attending the press junket, Lydia and I visited the Disney lot to screen the movie. Spoiler alert, I cried within the first two minutes. I left the film with a million questions, and couldn’t wait to hear director David Lowery, Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Oakes Fegley & Oona Laurence share their experiences surrounding the magic of Pete’s Dragon.
“…..we miss nature in its natural state. You know, we have to see it reproduced on our screen. And so that makes me sad. So the idea of playing a character who asks simply that you look beyond what’s right in front of you, and you make that a story point. I love that idea.” – Robert Redford
The magic of nature was a HUGE focus in Pete’s Dragon. The small mill town in the Pacific Northwest that housed the story showcased the beauty of the forest, and gently reminded us all of how far away we’ve come from days playing outside.
“….Once upon a time is used at the beginning of fairy tales for a reason, ’cause you just kind of automatically feel that if this happened a long time ago, the fantastical is a little bit more possible.” – David Lowery
The magic of a bygone era glows throughout Pete’s Dragon. From cars that don’t quite fit into modern age, to the lack of cell phones, to the use of vinyl and radios instead of cds or ipods…….the movie feels timeless. Even the clothing each character wears? It’s difficult to pinpoint what decade it belongs to…..and it gives you a sense of a small town that exists in the past.
As we prepared to share our thoughts on Pete’s Dragon and how to Disney Bound portraying the film……I took these themes into account. The magic of nature, and the magic of a past era. They’re such integral themes in the movie, we had to consider them with our outfits!
