Working on creating enriching activities around your AG Dolls? These are some of my favorite at home activities to do while studying American Girl Doll Addy!

Thank you to American Girl for gifting us with our American Girl Doll Addy.

Here we go.  We’re delving back into at home learning and my goal is to make it enriching and engaging.  One of the things we’ll be doing for the first few months? Using our American Girl historical dolls to study different historical periods.  We’ll use each doll and the chapter book that comes with them for a week or two.  During the time Lydia is reading the book, we’ll do daily activities around the events and activities of that time period.

First up? Addy Walker.  Addy Walker’s story is one that is important for all of our children to learn.  The original Addy book Finding Freedom tells the journey Addy and her family to escape enslavement on a plantation during the Civil War.  They journey to Philadelphia.  We’ll also be reading the second Addy Walker book, A Heart Full of Hope.  This tells more about Addy’s life after arriving in Philadelphia.

American Girl Doll Addy: Lessons and Activities

These are some of the activities we’ll be doing:

  1. National Museum of History Suggested Activities: Did you know that there is an Addy’s World exhibit in Washington DC at the National Museum of History? They have a ton to visit in person but also some REALLY great online resources and suggested activities.  We’ll be working our way through them for our first day of activities.
  2. Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt: This Coretta Scott King Award winning book is a great addition to the story of Addy Walker herself.  We’ll be reading it together, and then using a quilt making kit to make a quilt of our own.
  3. Recipes to Try: In Addy’s first book (Finding Freedom), she mentions recipes that aren’t usuals in our household.  We’re going to try making cornbread and grits! Can’t wait to try both.
  4. Slavery Timeline Poster: Even as young as age six or seven, a timeline poster can be really helpful to children.  We’ll be making a simple timeline to examine the history of slavery in the US up to present day.
  5. Shoebox Diorama: At the end of each doll study, Lydia will make a shoebox diorama of her character.  I can’t wait to see what she makes for American Girl Doll Addy!
