Moana: an epic story of adventure, finding ones’ own identity, and one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard all year!

We attended Moana as guests of Disney.

disney-bound-moana-10The day has come.  Moana is officially released.  This soon to be Disney classic contains so much magic, that it’s bound to become your newest obsession (move over Frozen)!

moana575f024d56a90-2Moana took over five years to make.  FIVE YEARS.  From original conception to casting to research to screen to release……five years.  Think about that.  And the crazy thing (that just proves how magical Disney really is)….little did we know, how timely this film would be.

I have to admit, I went into the screening of Moana with a bit of a heavy heart.  The world? Just doesn’t seem to contain a whole lot of magic lately.  And this movie? Reminded me of some pretty significant lessons.

MOANA is an adventurous, tenacious and compassionate 16-year-old who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. Along the way, she discovers the one thing she's always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker ("The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin," "The Princess & the Frog") and featuring newcomer Auli'i Cravalho as the voice of Moana, Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Moana" sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016. ©2016 Disney. Moana tells the story of a young girl struggling to discover her role.  She is torn between her allegiance to her village and her yearning to adventure beyond her homeland.   As we follow along with Moana, Maui (the demi-god who becomes her teammate and confidant), and even her not-so-intelligent pet chicken……the audience is reminded of their own adventures, and the struggles to find their own identities.

Moana exposes us all to the beauty of the Polynesian culture (and the film is visually STUNNING) while reminding of issues that span all culture.  It brings the story of one young princess / heroine / every girl to life framed by a soundtrack that you’ll be downloading before you get to the parking lot of the movie theatre.

And the best part of all? The part that is really magical?  It helps me as a parent, teach my daughter about a culture that is different than our own.  And that? Is the most important thing.

So my verdict? Moana is a must see.  It’s amazing.  And don’t be surprised when you see us heading out for our second viewing this week!

  1. I grew up obsessed with all the Disney princesses. Of course we had a touch of diversity back then with Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas, but Disney is really on it with their diverse princesses lately. When I heard the next one was a Polynesian princess, I was overjoyed. I am so happy to teach (and learn myself) my daughter about a culture portrayed so beautifully. (: So excited to see it!
