Are you getting ready to watch the latest release from Walt Disney Animation Studios? This Wish review from our whole family will help you to decide what ages and WHO this film is best for! No spoilers, but I promise, we’ll talk about if it’s scary!
Yes, we saw it. And I have a lot of thoughts. Wish is Disney Animation’s 100th anniversary release. It was initially announced at the last D23 Expo and truly……is a love letter to 100 years of Disney magic. But, what is it ABOUT? Is it scary? Is this a new Disney Princess?
Disney Wish Review
What is it ABOUT?
Wish brings us to the all new kingdom of Rosas (which is located somewhere in the Mediterranean). This magical kingdom is a place where citizens can give their wishes to King Magnifico (the ruler of the land) and…..live with the knowledge that wishes will be or can be granted. Enter Asha. Our heroine who discovers, everything in Rosas may not be as ideal as it seems. Asha’s passion for helping her community manifests in it’s own wish. The movie follows Asha’s journey along with her adorable goat friend, Valentino and one very special helper…..Star.
Disney’s Wish Running Time
The movie is 1 hour and 35 minutes. It’s a musical, and I think it’s a GREAT length for an all ages film. It has a nice pace, and is perfect for younger kids. The plot moves along nicely, and it’s a wonderful option for a first movie theatre experience.
What is Disney’s Wish Rated? And is it scary?
Wish is rated PG for thematic elements and mild action. There are VERY few scary moments, and little violence. We do see a villain’s SONG, along with some pretty flashy dark magic but nothing overtly frightening. The characters do express fear, and there are parts where you see the “good guys” imprisoned or captured by the villain’s. There is discussion of the death of a parent (but, it’s a Disney movie….so…..are we surprised?). All in all, I think this is a great starter movie. Very little that will feel super scary to the younger members of your household.
Our Family’s Reactions: Disney Wish Review
My thoughts:
I have to be honest, I expected a LOT from this film. I knew it would be a love letter to 100 years of Disney filmmaking. And there were areas where it TRULY delivered. I loved seeing little nods to our favorite Disney classics throughout the film. From the buildings to the character’s clothing to patterns in wallpaper…..the Easter Eggs are ALL over this film and it makes it truly fun to watch. I love the music, and I think we’ve got a few hit songs on our hands.
When we first got a glimpse of Asha at D23, I knew she would be something special. In fact, the characters as a whole…..truly do. They’re a beautifully diverse group in so many ways. We see varied skin tones, body types, ages, stages, and ways of being in the world. It truly looks like a community I would love to be a part of. Disney Animation really knocked it out of the park with this part.
I will say, the plot felt a bit simplistic to me. I would have loved to learn more about some of the characters. My guess? I do think this film was limited to a shorter running time for younger children. Could we have maybe learned a LITTLE more about some of Rosa’s citizens? I think so. Is there room for a follow up? Shorts that focus on some of them? Absolutely.
My overall reaction? I think it’s a beautiful love letter to where Disney Studio has been and where it is going.
Lydia’s Thoughts:
“I really liked Valentino, the goat and the singing mushrooms. I thought the animation was really unique and I loved how they included Easter Eggs.”
Note: the film is a mixture of 2d and computer animation which is really visually unique
Robbie’s Thoughts:
“I really enjoyed the humor that the characters like Valentino brought to the movie. I also thought the soundtrack added some great dimension to the storyline and it was a ton of fun.”
