Let’s talk pink hair color. Did you know that pink and red tones are some of the fastest hair dyes to fade? That can be prevented to a point with some specific steps.
Interested in getting pink hair color? One of the questions I get asked the most often is how I maintain mine. I’ve had pink hair for about two years now. To be specific, I have blonde highlights, brown roots and then a pink tint on top of that. I’ve had every shade from pastel pink to rose gold to bright pink hair colors and they have one thing in common….they fade easily. After a lot of advice from my hairstylist, and some trial and error…. I’ve found a pretty good routine to keep my pink hair color fresh.
I do go to the salon for a color refresh about every five weeks, so this is the in between salon visits routine.
Pink Hair Color: How I Maintain Mine
-
Cold Water Only: ?This is a must do. Say goodbye to the hot water….on your hair at least. Hot water opens the hair shaft, and pink hair color (or any other) will fade more quickly. So, I wash my hair with icy cold water.
-
Heat Protectant and Minimal Heat Styling: ?Heat (like the heat from a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron) can also cause color fade. I use a microfiber towel to remove MOST water from my hair when it’s freshly washed, then use a heat protectant while blow drying or heat styling.
-
Dry Shampoo and Dry Conditioner to extend time between washes: ?One of the most important steps to getting pink hair color or any hair color to last? Extending the time between washes. For dry or oily hair, a great dry shampoo will make a huge difference. And for dry hair like mine? A dry conditioner is also an important tool. Lately? I’ve been using items from Pantene’s new sulfate and paraben free Waterless Collection. The Pantene Cheat Day Dry Shampoo Foam is great for refreshing hair without drying it out. I love love love the foam, it contains B5 and is free of sulfates and parabens. My usual steps? I use Dry Shampoo Foam (along with Pantene’s Mist Behaving Dry Conditioner Mist) starting on day 3. With my dry hair, I’ve found it’s better to wait until then. I use the dry shampoo foam on the roots of my hair (dispensing a small amount into my palm and applying a section at a time to my roots with fingers) and then spray the dry conditioner mist only on the ends. I wait about three to five minutes, then brush through my hair and style as usual.
- Pink Depositing Shampoo: ?When I do shampoo, I use either a color depositing shampoo every other week (I wash every 5 to 7 days) or my hairdresser will mix a custom toner to use in conditioner. This helps keep pink hair color fresh.
