Considering watching Artemis Fowl with your kids? This Artemis Fowl movie review will tell you what ages it's perfect for!
Anyone else been counting the days? We all love a new Disney movie and right now? This Disney Plus release has been long anticipated in our house and last night? I stayed up late, waiting for Artemis Fowl to pop up in our streaming service so that I could preview it, and share my thoughts on the movie for kids. It didn't pop up until this morning, so Lydia and I watched it together.
Fans of the Eoin Colfer book have been eagerly awaiting this release, and the cast? Talk about a killer lineup. From Josh Gad to Colin Farrell to Judi Dench, this is a cast of amazing actors. Artemis Fowl tells the story of……Artemis Fowl. The 12 year old offspring of a LONGGGGGG line of criminals, who goes on a magical adventure as he tries to rescue his father from…..well, the fruits of his criminal labor and consequences of a series of…interesting choices. The ransom for his kidnapped father? The Aculos. The most magical item within the world of fairies.
Artemis Fowl Movie Review: A Mom's Opinion
Plot: Now let's get one thing out of the way, I have NOT read the Artemis Fowl books and neither has Lydia. So I went into this film without a ton of knowledge of the storyline (I knew the general idea and what we'd seen in the previews). I love the adventure and fantasy aspects of the story and how centered around a young hero it was. The visuals and special effects are absolutely stunning. The movie is definitely a bit hard to follow (at least for younger kids). There were parts I loved (Josh Gad is always awesome and he, as usual was great) but overall? I think this just wasn't suited for Lydia's age.
Lydia’s Thoughts and her Artemis Fowl Review: “I liked it because Josh Gad was in it. I loved seeing the fairies, and I didn't think the movie was scary. That's just my opinion about scary.”
Is it Scary? There aren't really any scary undertones or overall frightening characters, but there are large giants and a few parts where characters from the fairies world do attack children. These parts didn't bother Lydia, but could potentially scare kids who are sensitive to that type of visual.
What Ages Is it Good For? The Artemis Fowl books are Young Adult books, so I wasn't sure that the plot would hold Lydia's interested (she's almost 7). The plot is definitely intricate, and the movie is a bit dark. Lydia did love the visuals (they are definitely one of the strong points of the film), and she did follow the plot. She asked a few questions (mostly about places in Europe that were shown, artifacts that were mentioned), but overall? She was able to follow along and enjoyed the storyline. I think the plotline and pace are probably suited for slightly older kids (maybe ages 8 or 9 and up). My suggestion? Kids who loved the books. Let them see how it adapts to film, they'll love making a compare and contrast.
I hope this Artemis Fowl movie review was helpful! Artemis Fowl is available on Disney+ NOW!
