We just returned from a week at this one-of-a-kind family camp on the beautiful UC Santa Barbara campus, and I can honestly say: this is the kind of getaway that makes lasting memories, fills your cup, and sends you home more connected than ever.

When it comes to family camps in California this should definitely be on your short list!

In this review, I’ll walk you through what the week was like: from staying in the family dorms and meals in the campus dining commons, to the incredible programming for kids (seriously, my child cried when we left) and the much-needed adult activities like wine tasting, group runs and beach yoga. If you’ve been curious about what it’s like to spend a week at one of the best family camps , especially one based at a university, read on.

Review: Our Week at UCSB Family Vacation Center – The Ultimate Family Camps in California Experience

I feel like I should preface this with, I’m a UCSB alumni. I’d been eyeing this whole family camp for years, and was over the moon when the UCSB Family Vacation Center team reached out. They asked if I would be interested in an amazing opportunity to try out their family camp program and I couldn’t say yes fast enough.

First Impressions: A Campus Turned Summer Playground

The moment we pulled into UCSB, I was reminded of how gorgeous the location is. Imagine: ocean views, mountain backdrops, cool breezes off the Pacific, and a walkable campus that turns into a magical summer playground. The Family Vacation Center transforms one corner of UCSB into an oasis for campers of all ages. It’s literally the perfect location (no wonder I loved college so much).

The staff—primarily made up of enthusiastic, friendly experienced counselors / students—welcomed us with cheers, bubbles, and so much energy that we immediately felt like we were in the right place. The vibe was friendly, casual, and full of excitement.

But, where do you sleep? : The Family Dorms

Let’s be honest: when you hear the word dorms, it might not immediately scream “vacation.” But stick with me. These aren’t college party dorms—they’re private suites designed for families, and they work beautifully for the family campers vibe.

Each family gets their own cluster of rooms / mini apartment in San Rafael residence hall. The units includes  private rooms / sleeping areas (no bunk beds ) for parents and kids, plus a small living room and bathroom. Think of it like summer camp meets a family apartment. You’re not roughing it by any means, and it’s surprisingly relaxing to have everything within reach. We brought our own pillows for extra comfort, but linens and towels were provided.

It’s worth noting: the dorms are not luxurious, but they’re clean, safe, and totally functional. And because so much of your day is spent out and about, they serve exactly the purpose they need to—rest, privacy, and a place to wind down.

Another plus? Staying in dorms meant my daughter could safely run down the hall to new friends’ rooms, and we felt totally secure letting them have a little freedom. It brought back nostalgic memories of traditional california summer camps from my own childhoods—but this time, we got to join in, too. Gotta love family camps in california right? I mean, pure bliss!

Meals in the Dining Commons: Casual, Kid-Friendly, and Surprisingly Delicious Great Food

Three words: no. cooking. required.

That alone would make this vacation worth it. Meals are served buffet-style in the UCSB dining commons, which is just a short walk from the dorms (think three minutes or less) . We were pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the food. Each meal offered something for everyone—vegetarian options, plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, classic young children fare (hello, mac and cheese), and even a few dishes that felt a little elevated.

There’s also a make-your-own station for things like sandwiches or tacos, which made it super easy to accommodate picky eaters. And did I mention the dessert bar? The kids lived for it. We appreciated that the coffee was strong and plentiful in the mornings, and there was always a staff member nearby helping keep things clean and moving.

For families with dietary needs (I’m gluten free) , the kitchen staff was incredibly helpful. We met several families with gluten-free or dairy-free kids, and no one had any issues finding meals that worked.

Best of all, there are no dishes to wash and no grocery runs. Just sit down, eat together, and head off to your next activity. Bliss.

Kids’ Day Camp: Fun, Independence, and Lifelong Friendships

This is the real heart of UCSB Family Vacation Center: the day camp experience for kids.

Each child is placed in an age-specific group with a counselor or team of summer camp counselors who become their buddies for the week. The programming is thoughtfully tailored to match developmental stages—from bubbles and songs for the young kids to beach days, scavenger hunts, talent shows, and mini-excursions for older kids filled with a wide variety of activities and options all the way through high school aged campers.

As a parent, it was pure joy to watch our child run off in the morning with their age group , excited for what the day would bring. The staff does an amazing job building trust and connection early on, which helps kids feel confident and safe. By the second day, we were greeted with a breathless recap of the water balloon fight, a group chant, and an enthusiastic “Can we please go back tomorrow?”

It’s not just babysitting—this is full-blown youth camp. Crafts, games, storytelling, nature walks, sports, traditional camp activities and plenty of silly moments made the days fly by. And the bonus? You get a few hours every morning of free time , knowing your kids are having the time of their lives.

Even better, the evening “Parents’ Night Out” events allow for extra grown-up time while the counselors host movie nights or pajama parties for the kids. This was a game-changer. More on that in a bit.

Adult Activities: Wine Tasting, Yoga, Excursions and Actual Relaxation

Let’s talk about what made this trip feel like an actual vacation for us grown-ups (cause this really IS a vacation for all the family members parents included).

While the kids are off doing their thing, the camp offers a daily roster of adult-only activities for small groups of grown ups. Think yoga classes overlooking the ocean, campus tours, art workshops, and group excursions. We chose the Santa Barbara wine tasting tour, which included a shuttle, lunch, and tastings at a few scenic wineries. It was relaxed, well-organized, and just indulgent enough to feel like a treat.

There are also opportunities to join hikes and group runs, play tennis on the campus tennis courts or pickleball. And if you just want to sit under a tree with a book and a latte from the campus café? That’s totally encouraged too.

The camp strikes a rare and wonderful balance: enough programming to keep you busy and engaged, but also quality time to breathe, nap, or wander. It gave us the ability to reconnect as a couple while also having family moments that didn’t feel rushed or chaotic.

And those “Parents’ Nights Out”? We took full advantage—dinner at a local Santa Barbara restaurant one night, and a moonlit walk on campus another, then a group game night one night. Just the kind of quality time we never get enough of at home. It was honestly so much fun to have this kind of time!

Bonus: most of the evenings there is kids’ programming at the same time as adult activities, but if you need childcare LATER, then you have the option of requesting babysitting for your family unit (with one of the camp counselors).

Evening Activities: Community, Laughter, and That Campfire Feeling

Every evening at FVC brings the community together. The staff hosts events like trivia nights, talent shows, group games, and themed parties. One night might be a carnival on the lawn with snow cones and face painting, and another might be a “Beach Bash” bonfire.

Our favorite was the all-camp talent show. Each kids’ group performed a little skit or dance they had been working on all week, and the parents were beaming. It was that perfect combo of hilarious, heartwarming, and only slightly chaotic—in the best way.

We also loved the low-key moments: s’mores around the firepit, sunset walks by the lagoon, and spontaneous gatherings on the quad with other family groups . Everyone is there with the same intention—to connect, relax, and play. That shared purpose creates a kind of instant camaraderie that’s rare and beautiful.

Family Camps in California: What Makes UCSB Family Vacation Center Special?

So many things.

It’s the staff, who pour their hearts into creating joy and structure for every age group during each of the 6-night sessions over the summer. Also, it’s the setting, where the ocean breeze and eucalyptus trees set the tone for a slower, simpler pace. It’s the freedom to do things together, but also to have space apart. Most of all? It’s the summer sleepaway camp vibes of it all.

Most of all, it’s the feeling that someone else is taking care of the logistics, so you can focus on being present with your people.

There’s no long car rides between events, no decisions about where to eat, no battles over screen time. Everything you need is within walking distance. And while it’s not fancy, it is intentional and thoughtful in all the ways that matter. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect while you disconnect.

Final Thoughts: Will We Go Back?

Without a doubt.

This was one of the rare vacations where we returned home feeling more rested, more connected, and more grateful. Our child made real friends, gained confidence, and experienced the joy of camp. We had time as a couple, as individuals, and as a family.

Whether you’re looking to unplug from your routine, introduce your kids to the magic of camp and a new family tradition , or simply have a vacation where everyone gets something out of it, the UCSB Family Vacation Center is worth exploring.

It’s not luxury travel—it’s meaningful travel. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we’re craving most. If you are looking for family camps in california ……this might be just the perfect fit!
