Behind the Scenes: The Dove Dry Serum Antiperspirant & Deodorant Yoga Event and what it taught me about my own body image.
Thank you to Dove for hosting me at their yoga event and sponsoring this post. I’ve gotta be honest, I was REALLY excited when Dove invited me to attend a special event with them back in February. They were launching the new Dove Dry Serum Antiperspirant & Deodorant by doing a series of fun events in Los Angeles. And my invite? To an intimate yoga class where we could really put their new product to the test. Dove’s amazing body positivity messages and empowerment campaigns are right up my alley, and I couldn’t WAIT to attend and meet their team. I bought a cute new workout outfit (it was even blue to match the Dove logo) and I couldn’t wait.
I Hated Yoga: What Dove and Yoga Taught Me About Body Image
Now, never mind the fact that I’m not a huge yoga fan. Running? Absolutely. Kickboxing? Yes please. But this pear shaped body doesn’t yoga. My mind wanders. I’m just not very zen. I was still REALLY excited about the event, and even had plans to yoga in just a sports bra. I mean, I’d done all this work on my self confidence, and I was READY.
You have to laugh, because reality hit and it hit me HARD. The event was at an adorable house that is used as an event venue in Hollywood. I got there on time, and couldn’t wait to get started. As the other attendees arrived, I realized……oh man, I’m the oldest and biggest person here. Now, let’s get one thing straight. I’m certainly NOT the biggest person in most rooms. At a size 10 to 12, I’m very much average size in most parts of the US. Just not Los Angeles. And not at this particular event. And to get a second thing straight, the other women attending the yoga class were LOVELY. Very nice and friendly. It wasn’t them. It was ME.
I sat at this event in my tee shirt, and literally panicked when it was time to take it off. All this work on body positivity, and I got in my own head. Now, here’s where the Dove team truly shined and one of the reasons I’m ridiculously proud to work with them (besides the fact that the Dove Dry Serum Antiperspirant & Deodorant is AMAZING and I’ve used it everyday since). They overheard me comment to my friend who had come along to take pictures for me. They heard me whisper that I was uncomfortable. And they came over, sat next me……and reassured me. They told me that they had very specifically chosen me to attend for multiple reasons. They told me I was beautiful. They told me they loved that I represented THEIR values. They reminded me that they truly believed beauty was represented in all shapes and sizes. And they also told me I could wear my shirt or not, whatever I felt comfortable with.
That’s what true body positivity is all about. The constant work. The steps forward and backward. And the tribe that helps you when you struggle. I’m proud that Dove is a part of my tribe.
Now, the product. The amazing Dove Dry Serum Antiperspirant & Deodorant that we attended this transformational event to test. I’ve literally used it every single day since. It’s the first ever instantly drying serum for your underarms. It’s sheer, lightweight and effective…..REALLY effective. It comes in amazing scents and helps get you through even the most stressful situations without breaking a sweat (even yoga classes without a tee shirt).
