Thank you to McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal® and The Motherhood for sponsoring this conversation about our morning routine. Opinions are my own.
Real talk. Mornings in our home have been a bit of a challenge (I know, any other parents who have to get themselves and their little ones out the door are nodding in solidarity right now.) Both my husband and I work early in the morning, and have to be out the door before 7 am. And yes, that includes getting Lydia to school.
For awhile, it was a STRUGGLE. From getting myself ready, to feeding all three of us……I felt frantic and rushed. Plus, some mornings my husband leaves at 6 am….which means it's just us girls.
So, after a few temper tantrums (on my part) and tears…..I realized that I wasn't preparing myself for these mornings. Instead of dreading those days, I made a few adjustments…..and now our mornings are running smoothly.
5 Simple Tips for Making Your Mornings Run Smoothly (aka our morning routine):
Pack the Car the Night Before: One of my mom friends suggested this, and I can't BELIEVE how much time it saves. Those four trips to the car with all our stuff? Adds a solid ten minutes to my morning and a whole lot of stress. So? I pack everything the night before (laptop, purse, Lydia's things for school, work items, lunch)…..and everything except for perishables go into the car. That way, as we leave in the morning….I grab lunch and go.
Wake Up Earlier: I'm tired (aren't all moms?). So, my goal was to sleep as late as possible each morning. Well, that lead to serious rushing. And rushing? Lead to stress. Now? I wake up 20 minutes earlier. I use those 20 minutes to drink a cup of coffee and get myself ready before Lydia wakes up.
Choose Outfits the Night Before: For you AND the kids. Lydia loves to choose her own outfits. This can be a WHOLE ordeal. Now? I set out two outfit choices the night before for her. She just picks from them and we move on. My outfit? Set out, shoes and all. I can't believe how much time it saves!
Leave Room to Play: For a couple months, I found that Lydia would get upset when I dropped her off at school. It finally donned on me, the mornings I drop her off are really rushed. We have no time to just BE together. So, part of the benefit of waking up earlier? We spend twenty minutes playing before we leave the house. She's happy, and believe it or not…..drop off is smoother and faster. So we end up saving time!
Plan a Quick and Better-for-You Breakfast: Breakfast was one of our biggest issues during rushed mornings. I either didn't plan it, or it took forever to make. So, I polled my friends. What did they eat? What were their kids eating? Enter McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal®. I love that McCann's Irish Oatmeal is made from 100 percent whole grain Irish oats, and that it is minimally processed with nothing added and nothing artificial.
