Part of respecting my body is treating it well, and making strong choices that will allow it thrive.
Amidst all the concerns caused by coronavirus, please don’t forget about taking care of the rest of your body. Here’s a sponsored post I wrote for Invitae about heart health.
This post is sponsored by Invitae and SHE Media.
Part of respecting my body is treating it well, and making strong choices that will allow it thrive.
February was American Heart Month, and it was the perfect time to talk about self-love and self-care. Now we all know this is a huge priority for me, so last month I spent time doing some research and putting thought into what I can do to work on my physical health. I even had the opportunity to try a couple new things….one of which scared me. A lot.
While speaking at and attending #BlogHer20 Health, I got to participate in a Soul Cycle class and conversation around Heart Health for Women with Invitae. It inspired me to dig into my own health journey and to do some research about what I could adjust or anticipate.
Treating My Body Well: What I'm Doing
Treating My Body Well: What I'm Doing
- Genetic Testing: I have to admit, doing this made me a little nervous. But now that I'm 40, I felt like it was time to get some in depth information about my health. Invitae offered the opportunity for me to try out their Cardio Screen, and I jumped at the chance. Invitae is a medical genetics company whose goal is to bring comprehensive genetic information into mainstream medicine. These tests, which have been available to clinicians for years, can now be initiated by consumers through Invitae's website and they are a great way to arm yourself with information to discuss with your doctor. The test I took? Specifically looks at 77 genes to help determine your risk of developing an inherited form of cardiovascular disease, plus offers access to genetic counseling services. I'm so glad I took it, I feel armed with more information!
- Exercise That Makes Me Feel Good: I know, I know, this isn't new. You guys know how important I think exercise is. I became a runner a few years ago, and it's one of my favorite things. My goal? To exercise in a balanced and healthy way. I walk when I need to and I run when I can.
- Water Intake: Honestly? This is one of my biggest challenges. I'm terrible at remembering to drink enough water. And we all know how important it is. I just downloaded an app to help me keep track!
- Sleep More: Sleep is huge. And lately? I haven't been getting enough of it. I'm setting a bedtime for myself (a reasonable one) and sticking to it. I know how important it is to get enough rest.
- Stress Management: You can do all the right things, but stress? Has major physical effects. For me? I'm working on finding ways to check in with myself and to manage stressful times.
What are you doing this month to treat your body well?
I hate how water is one of the most simplest things every, and yet I never get enough! I really have been trying to up my game lately, but it’s so easy to fall off track!
