Looking for summer activities for kids? We’re sharing our full summer bucket list (and bonus, most of these activities are free or very inexpensive)!
This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Banana Boat®. The opinions and text are all mine.
Can you believe summer is just around the corner? Trust me, as a teacher…..I’m counting down the days (there are less than 40 school days left, in case you were wondering).I’m dreaming of lazy mornings, warm days, and exploring all the fun summer activities for kids that I’ve been bookmarking on my computer to try out during our summer vacation.
A couple summers ago, I shared a general list of summer activities for kids (YOU CAN SEE IT HERE, AND SOME PRETTY ADORABLE PICTURES OF TEENY TINY TODDLER LYDIA).However, I get emails ALL the time about Los Angeles specific family locations. So, I dove into the massive list I’ve been keeping on my computer…..and I’m sharing a few items from the Anderson Family Bucket List……the best summer activities for kids in LA (along with some suggestions for how to find similar activities wherever you live)!
Whether you’re hiding out at home by the pool or heading out to explore…….please don’t forget your sunscreen (this has happened to me more than once)! Now? I keep our “everyone-can-use-it” sunscreen options in every bag (no excuses).Even though Lydia is NOT A BABY (as she pointed out) anymore….her skin is extremely sensitive. We still use baby sunscreen on her (and on all of us, because it’s easier to share). Our current fav?Banana Boat® Simply Protect™ Baby Sunscreen Lotion.I love that it provides Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB protection (SPF 50) without oxybenzone & parabens, and without added oils or fragrances. It’s lightweight, and easy to apply…..plus is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes. It also stays put in 7 conditions – sun, pool water, ocean water, wind, sweat, sand and even 100 degree heat**…….so we’re all covered regardless of which summer activities for kids we choose!
**7 conditions does not apply to tanning or oil products, SPF 100 lotions, lip balms, Kids FREE and Zinc Faces.
Our Summer Bucket List: Summer Activity Ideas for Kids
Local Museum and Gardens:Try to find a local museum in YOUR hometown, most of them have great evening activities in the summer! The Getty Center is a TON of fun for kids and parents alike, and a total steal (you only pay for parking). They have a great kids activity center where you can enjoy the AC, a fun garden to picnic in, and even have concerts in the evenings.
Hit the Beach:Try to find an off the beaten path beach town…..they’re like a slice of heaven! Manhattan Beach is one of our favorite spots to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s a cute, tiny beach town with GREAT places to eat (try Uncle Bill’s Pancake House) and less crowded beaches. A must do for short staycations or even a day away from the crowds.
Disneyland: I had to say it. Disneyland in the summer is my FAVORITE. A ton of the indoor Disneyland Rides are perfect for beating the heat…..and nothing beats a Dole Whip in warm weather!
Local Public Pool:Most towns have similar public pools, they’re a great place to cool off and to connect with other moms! If you haven’t checked out the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, you’re missing out. This public pool is stunning, always clean….and just steps from the beach. Plus the admission is a total steal!
Your County Fair:Almost all County Fairs happen in the summer, be sure to put yours on the calendar! The Los Angeles County Fair is always at the end of the summer, and is the BEST way to check out livestock, hit up the rides we all loved as kids, and to eat some of the best food Los Angeles has to offer!
Children’s Museum:Check out the children’s museum in YOUR town. The Discovery Cube is one of our favorite indoor children’s museums (we even had Lydia’s birthday party there). They have great rotating exhibits and their cafe is top notch!
Ice Cream Taste Testing: Trust me, your kids will love you if you make Ice Cream Taste Testing a part of their summer homework! You can try an ice cream taste testing in your own home or town. If you’re near Los Angeles, it’s the perfect place to taste fancy ice cream. From After’s Ice Cream to Cream’s Ice Cream Sandwiches to Salt and Straw to Sloan’s……we plan to test all our favorite shops this summer and to create a full guide to the Best Ice Cream Shops in LA!
Local Concerts:Check out your local parks for evening family concerts….they’re a total blast! If you’re near LA, Santa Monica’s famous pier concerts are a blast with or without kids. They’re totally free, you just need to pay to park.Head to Santa Monica early, pick up picnic items…..and enjoy dinner and music on the sand!
Hidden Playgrounds: Be sure to find those hidden gem playgrounds in your hometown, they’re perfect for lazy summer days!If you’re local to Los Angeles, Malibu Country Mart is one of my favorite beat the heat spots in Los Angeles, they have an adorable playground, the weather is always stunning, and some of the best smoothies in LA.
