Is your kiddo heading back to school? Here are five questions to ask your child about school each and every night!
Can you believe we are talking back to school tips already? As a teacher, I know how important it is that parents discuss school with their children each and every night. As a parent, by the time we get to the end of the day…..I'm often at a bit of a loss. So, I'm sharing the five questions that every parent should ask their children about school from preschool to elementary school age.

Questions to Ask Your Child About School:
What was your favorite activity at school today? This is a great way to get your child to be SPECIFIC. They can share their favorite project, play space, activity…..what they liked MOST.
What did you NOT like today at school? The lunch? A kid bothering them at recess. It's important to ask this, if anything DID bother your child at school…..you want to create an opening for them to share without having to bring it up.
Who did you play with today? One of the biggest complaints or concerns I hear from KIDS as a teacher? I don't have anyone to play with at recess. By asking your child who they played with, you are able to help them strategize. Are they playing with the same kid all the time? Perhaps encourage them to branch out. Did they make a point of playing with a new student? Compliment them. If they're having trouble finding a friend to play with……come up with a plan. Which game are they interested in? Do they have something interesting to share with a new friend? Can they plan for WHO they would like to play with?
What did you read today? For younger kiddos, it may be a read aloud or story time. By asking what they read, you can reinforce literacy skills and share books that YOU are reading. That connection between reading at school and reading in LIFE? Is key to academic success.
What are you interested in learning more about? Students learn about a variety of topics at school. Find out what their interests are…..these are opportunities to involve your family in your child's education. Do they love art? Schedule a trip to a local museum. Learning about ancient history? Visit that traveling mummy exhibit when it comes to town!
Is your family gearing up to head back to school? Don't forget to pick up staples that will help you (and your kiddo) head into the classroom in style! Lydia's and my adorable mommy and me moccasins have already been to our respective schools multiple times. They're SUPER comfy, and I love how versatile they are. These Minnetonka must haves are just as stylish with tights and a sweater dress in cool weather as they are in the dog days of summer. Don't forget to scroll down, I'm teaming up with my fellow mamas to giveaway a Minnetonka gift card just in time for the first weeks of school!

I always ask what they learned about, who they played with, if they had a good day. They are still young, but i’m trying to teach them to ask questions, like what their friends names are and things like that so that they can remember and tell me. I want to know everything! 🙂
How was their day did you make any friends do u see a familiar face in your class from your last year class don’t be afraid to tell your teacher when someone does or said something to you your don’t like and tell me if you are being bullied in school!
My daughter is only 2, so she’s not in school yet, but I love these tips. I especially like the idea of asking her about which topics she wants to learn more!
Fizz and Frosting?
My kids aren’t at school but after nursery on Sunday I asked my son if he liked it and who he played with.
I always ask my kids to tell me 1 good thing about their day. Most of the time, I can get some great conversations going!
A great reminder, the week before we head back to school! My 6 year old is fond of saying ‘I don’t remember’ – !! So it helps to have more questions to nudge him a bit : )
I always ask how was their day and what did they learn in school.
My kids aren’t in school yet, but after dance class or Sunday school, I ask my daughter if she was good and listened, did she play with friends or talk to anyone new, were there any mean kids, what did she learn, did she have fun? 🙂 I like your question “What did you NOT like today?”. And I love your moccasins..I love baby moccasins but I’ve never thought adult ones were for me. Until now, perhaps, cause I can totally imagine myself wearing that pair!
I ask, How Was Your Day? Tell me about it.
I ask about their day and what they learned.
I ask them to tell me about what happened that day of school.
What was there favorite thing they did that day? Sometimes it’s something they learned, other times a game, whatever it is they open up real quick. 🙂
I like to ask if they had a special moment during the day that was really fun or exciting or even sad.
I ask what is something she failed at and then I tell her Im proud of her bc she tried something new.
What did you guys learn today?
I ask them what their favorite part of the day was.
I’m expecting number six and I’m so thankful that I get the pleasure of being the first one to pick them up from school. I always ask if anything exciting happened today. Did they learn something new?
I’ll be sure to ask my sons, open ended questions. Lol so they can’t just say “good” or something like that
i would ask how was your day, but i would let them steer the conversation. Did you make any new friends etc.
I always ask if they had a good day and what they did that was fun. I want them to think about and remember the good stuff so I ask that question last. I hope they always enjoy school and look forward to it. After all, they will be in school for many, many years.
I always start with…”and how was your day?” Why, I do not know. Habit. Then I ask if they enjoyed lunch.
I like to ask what the favorite part of the day was and what their homework is, too.
My daughter graduated high school in 2011 and my 2 boys will be starting Kindergarten tomorrow; I remember asking my daughter to tell me one thing she learned that day which always led to a nice conversation, I will be asking my boys the same question in hopes of the same thing.
My daughter just started kindergarten last week. I always ask her how her day went, what her favorite thing was, if there was anything she didn’t like, etc. Getting details out of her is super hard, so I always have to ask specific questions.
I ask my 2 granddaughters (sisters) if they had fun in school today. They both love to go to school and always tell me what they learned and activities they did.
My son is 12 now so in the past few years I have had to change my strategy, The first thing ask him is what he would like for a snack, then I wait before I pounce or he will just shut down and I won’t hear about anything that happened til much later. I usually ask him what he had for lunch and once he is talking he will talk about how his day went.
i ask them how their day has been and what did they learn ?
Just general questions – I have teenagers so sometimes I get a reply sometimes I don’t.
I always asked how their day went which brought all that went on good and not so good. I would also ask if they had much homework.
I ask about what they did, what was fun, what they learned ….mostly I just let them ramble.
Did you play with (Ian, Gustavo, etc.) today?
