The next Disney blockbuster is releasing soon, and kids everywhere are OVER THE MOON. Here are 5 Family Activities you should do before seeing Moana.
Trust me, Moana is going to be amazing! This summer I got the chance to visit the Disney Lot for a Moana Sneak Peek day. I saw footage, learned about the film, and fell in love with Moana, Pua the Pig, and Maui. We will be seeing Moana together as a family.
Moana is a beautifully made film, but also an opportunity to teach children of all ages about a culture that is VASTLY underrepresented in mainstream media. These family activities will help your children learn more about Moana’s culture, the creators of the movie, and have a little fun before seeing the film.
5 Family Activities to do Before Seeing Moana
Create a Voyaging Vessel: The Ancient Polynesians were some of the greatest navigators of all time. Their journeys and voyages were (and are) a great source of pride for the people of the South Pacific. Voyages are also a HUGE part of the Moana story. Help your children build their own voyaging vessel using clay or playdough.
Polynesian Mythology: At the early Moana press day, we learned that almost every island in the South Pacific has their own story about Maui (the demi-god). Read multiple Maui stories, and compare them with the character in the movie.
Music: The music in Moana is INCREDIBLE. Prepare your children for the soundtrack by listening to OTHER music from the Polynesian Islands and studying the instruments used in the region.
Tattoo Design: Maui’s tattoos are their own character in the film. We learned about the research and care that went into designing them. Tattoos are a significant part of the culture of the Islands. Research them, and have your children design their own.
What Moana Wears: Moana’s outfits in the film are amazing. So amazing in fact, that Lydia and I dressed just like her. To learn more about them, check out our post on how to Disney Bound Moana. As fun as Disney Bounding is, in this case….it also teaches a lot about traditional attire.
MOANA arrives in theatres everywhere on November 23rd!
