I know, I know. It’s swim suit season……and you’re all kinds of uncomfortable. Trust me, I get it. This was me too. Until last summer. Last summer, you guys changed my life. As I complained on Instagram Stories about the size of my thighs, I revealed that I had worn a bathing suit twice in the years since my daughter had been born (she was almost four years old at the time). I joked that the only thing I could think of to get out of my head, was to do a photoshoot in a bathing suit. I figured if I put the pictures on the internet, I wouldn’t care if a couple people at our local pool saw my cellulite.
The response? More than I’d expected. SO MANY WOMEN. Saying they felt the same. Telling me to go for it. A few weeks later, I did. Despite my almost crippling anxiety, I took pictures in my favorite bathing suit. And then? I put them up in a blog post. And what happened? I slowly felt free.
Free to enjoy the pool with my daughter. Free from the prison I had created surrounding my own body image. Free to appreciate the beauty of my body instead of fixating on my “flaws”. Free to see the beauty in our moments instead of remaining trapped by years of negative self talk.
So this year…..it’s YOUR turn. To say yes to joy, to say yes to freedom, to say yes to creating memories, to #justwearthesuit.
I promise, it’s not as scary as you think. And I’ll be right here, cheering you on. And so will ALL of these women. Our hashtag will serve as a community for all of us. A place to support each other and to celebrate the beauty we see in ourselves.
