Summer is pretty much over, and so is #justwearthesuit…….after months of seeing women share their own stories, I'm sharing what I learned from all of YOU.
Well, here we are. The weather is cooling down (except for here in LA), pumpkin spice lattes are back, and we're all dreaming of leggings and sweaters. Summer is ending. And I still can't believe it all happened.
On June 15th, I issued a challenge to you guys (and to myself). After starting my own journey of body positivity……I wanted to create a place we could ALL work together. I knew what an empowering experience it had been to share my own story, my own bathing suit pictures, and how it had TRULY changed my outlook…..and I hoped that some of you would be able to have the same experience. So I asked you to join me. If I'm being honest, I figured a few of my friends would do it if I begged them. And I did. I asked a few fellow bloggers / instagrammers to join me on the first day. And they did. But what happened after that? Was so much bigger than I expected.
As of this morning, #justwearthesuit has been used 650 times. That's 650 empowering posts, 650 women who have banded together to celebrate THEMSELVES. The photos are stunning…..but the stories in the captions? Are LIFE CHANGING.
As we slowly close out the summer……I wanted to share a few lesson I've learned from all of YOU.
Body Confidence is a Challenge for Women of ALL Shapes and Sizes: You don't have to be above a certain size to struggle with body confidence. Insecurity comes in all shapes and sizes and spoiler alert, it's something we ALL battle as grown women. If you haven't PLEASE, read THIS POST my friend Amiyrah wrote as we kicked off the summer. It speaks volumes.
Celebrating Physical Attributes is a Challenge for Women Who We All View As Strong: What shocked me the MOST? The behind the scenes conversations I had with some of you. I'm talking about women who I view as UBER confident. Business women, models, thought leaders, women who champion for their daughters to be strong…..and what I heard behind closed doors? “I'm afraid to post this picture.” “I can't believe you do this all the time.” “This is SO uncomfortable.” And I GET IT. We all want to be confident in THEORY, but it's a lot harder to do in practice. The idea of putting a picture of your THIGHS on the internet? Is enough to make even the bravest woman cringe. But those that did it? Every single time…..came back and said how empowering it was.
Hearing That You're Not Alone Makes All the Difference: My favorite conversations about #justwearthesuit happened offline. I can't tell you how many times I was at a blog event, or even our local beach, and was approached about “my hashtag”. First of all, it's not MINE. It's ours. My goal was never to make it MINE. My goal was to be not alone. My goal was to connect with other women who were struggling with the issues. And man, I realized I sure wasn't alone.
Now two things. First of all, #justwearthesuit is NOT closed. Keep posting. I will. But I'm sure as weather cools down, things will get a little slower and we'll amp up again in the spring.
And last? I promised a prize, right? At the beginning of the summer, I said one of you would win a $500 Nordstrom gift card for posting. At random, I picked a winner. And it's………
Please email me to claim your prize!
So tell me, what did #justwearthesuit do for YOU?
