Looking back: introducing solids……what we did right, and what I'd do differently.
Thank you to 1,000 Days for sponsoring this post.
I have a LOT of friends having babies. Like, a LOT. And guess what people with babies do. Ask a lot of questions about babies. As we talk about breastfeeding, diapering, and more……I realized that there are a ton of things from when Lydia was an infant that I never shared on here. So, I wanted to kick off a new series. Looking back. With a little perspective, I'll be sharing things that worked for us when she was an infant and things that I wish we'd done differently.
Introducing Solids: What We Did Right and What I'd Do Differently
Introducing solids was a huge milestone in our lives, and I WISH I'd known about the amazing organization I'm partnering with when Lydia was entering this stage. 1,000 Days is a nonprofit that focuses on improving nutrition for moms and babies……and they recently released a series of videos that address introducing solids. These amazing resources are free, and provide a ton of information in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help make introducing solids an easy and stress free process.
When to Start:
Did you know that more than half of infants are introduced solid foods too soon? This VIDEO has a ton more info…….
We started Lydia on solid foods at 6 months, and in hindsight……this was the perfect time (it's also the age that is recommended). Other signs of readiness: strong head control, an interest in food, sitting up with little to no support, and ability to grasp objects. As I look back, I'm glad we waited until Lydia was six months old, it gave us time to really cement our breastfeeding and then to introduce solids in a slow and steady pace.
What to Start WITH:
We started Lydia with rice cereal as her first food, however…..in hindsight…..I would have started with something like avocado. This VIDEO shares some amazing options for first foods, and I really wish I'd had this info when we were introducing solids.
What About Water:
Another huge question…..what about water? This VIDEO talks about when water is appropriate, and how much. We actually rarely gave Lydia water before the age of 1, but I love the info that is provided here.
