How to Introduce Solids

You just got the whole nursing and bottle-feeding thing down, right? Now it's time to introduce solids.  We're sharing how to introduce solids, what did and what didn't work for us!

Thank you to Kroger for sponsoring this post.

Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze! Now that Lydia is a little older, I'm able to reflect on what we did for those important transitions during her first year of life … and share both what worked and what didn't.  Today, we're talking about how to introduce solids.
Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze!I felt like as soon as we had nursing, pumping at work, bottle feeding and cleaning all the tools down … we were starting to talk about the introduction of solid foods.  Luckily, our pediatrician was great about presenting different options to us and then helping us make informed decisions.
Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze! When: Traditionally, solids are introduced anywhere between four and six months.  Most pediatricians suggest watching for signs of readiness (interest in food, ability to hold head up, sitting well while supported, doubling birth weight, signs of hunger).  We chose to wait until six months for a variety of reasons.  Lydia was (and still is) VERY small for her age.  She didn't demonstrate much interest in food until right before the six-month mark and we had some issues nursing early on.  Since she seemed satisfied with breast milk, we waited.
Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze! What: We tried a number of different tools, foods, etc…….and there are a few that I would ABSOLUTELY use again.

Snapbibs: These are seriously the BEST.  They're handmade, durable and super easy to clean.  We kept them in our kitchen and in our diaper bag for at least a year. (They also make placemats)

Replay Recycled:  If you've followed me on Instagram for awhile, you know that I'm obsessed with these plates.  They're lightweight, easy to clean, and made from recycled materials.  From day one, we used their spoons and bowls.

Simple Truth Organic Baby Food Pouches: One of my biggest concerns when we started solids was, how would we GO anywhere? Breastfeeding is, well easily portable.  At home, I did steam veggies at times … but even there as a full time working mom … I didn't always have that option.  We researched the brands we fed Lydia carefully.  Simple Truth Organic Food Pouches? Some of our favs.  In fact, Lydia still eats some of the Level 2 pouches or we add them to smoothies! Keep a few pouches on hand, you'll thank yourself later.
Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze! How: We started with sweet potato, and every 3-5 days introduced a new solid.  We always nursed (or Lydia had a bottle of breast milk) first and then tried solids.  Our goal? Was to not PUSH her.  I will say, she is STILL a picky eater.  We did introduce more sweet fruits before veggies, and there is some debate that veggies should be introduced first.  At around 9 months, we started with soft finger foods.  Lydia seemed to love food a whole lot more once she could feed herself.

My biggest piece of advice? Keep your cool.  It's easy to be concerned that a baby NEVER eat.  And remember, portions for a six month old? Just a few tablespoons.  This (like everything else during that first year) is SO significant and then just becomes the norm.
Wondering how to introduce solids? These simple tips will make this milestone a breeze! So mamas, any tips? What helped you? Tell us your experience with how to introduce solids!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Kroger. The opinions and text are all mine.

Even after I felt comfortable wearing a suit…..I didn’t feel comfortable EATING in a suit. I felt like, who was I? With curves and rolls on display to have the audacity to eat french fries or an ice cream cone. Here’s to having the audacity this summer. whatever that looks like for YOU.
🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀ ⠀ Thi 🚗 Road Trips……Which one are you?⠀⠀This weekend we flew to Sacramento and then road tripped north to see my family up in the mountains. It was so much fun to spend time together, and it reminded me….we are ALL one of these people on a toad trip.⠀⠀Bonus points to the VERY nice road trip vehicle we had…..the team at @MazdaUSA lent us a 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus and it was AMAZING (it even had a wireless charging dock for our phones). It made my snack stops even better (yup, we tried Dutch Bros for the first time and OMG we need them to expand to more Southern California locations ASAP).⠀⠀So, which are person are YOU on a road trip? ⠀⠀#familytravel #drivemazda
….and also why are we commenting negatively abou ….and also why are we commenting negatively about people’s appearances in 2023?Double also: if the worst thing people on the interwebs can say about me is that they don’t like my smile…..then I feel pretty good about what type of person I’ve chosen to be.
💕Because we all want our kids to soar………⠀⠀So fitting right? Elvis named this plane after his daughter. And all I’ve been thinking about throughout our St Jude experience…..is how certain things truly bond all of us. Certain things cross economic barriers and continent and language differences. Parenthood is one of those. It’s a universal experience. And I think whether we are parents or role models or aunties or friends……we all know what it’s like to dream and hope on behalf of a child in your life.⠀⠀In 2012, when I was newly married and not yet a parent one of my students was diagnosed with cancer. Without revealing details about her or her family, I think it’s important to recognize that economic barriers prevented what should have been an earlier diagnosis. It was one of many times I was reminded during my time with the amazing humans in my classrooms that…..we do NOT all have the same access or experiences in life. That student and her family were one of the miracle stories. In fact, when she came back to class, she complained about missing soccer games at recess and fell right back in with the rest in a way that to this day brings joyful tears to my eyes. ⠀⠀I said this on my stories during my trip, but…..I didn’t realize until this experience that families at St Jude NEVER receive a bill. Ever. No matter what. That this access gives families hope during their darkest days.⠀⠀I’m going to be teaming up with St. Jude to do a fun challenge that will hopefully inspire y’all to support them too. Let’s just say that…..for this scared of heights, refuses to take my feet off the ground theme park girlie……I’m going to making the ultimate sacrifices.⠀⠀What rides would you want to see me go on in support of St Jude? (be kind, I’m literally TERRIFIED of any and all rides that have a height limit). You know they REALLY moved me if I’m even thinking of doing this! ⠀⠀@stjude #stjudeambassador
