‘Tis the season. Everyone is gearing up for the holidays, and you know what that means…..holiday cards! I'm sharing my favorite tips for family photos outfits, plus giving you some sneak peaks of what we'll be wearing in our cards THIS year.
One of my favorite things to do each year is to take family photos. In fact, we take them year round….instead of just over the holidays. So, I have a little more experience planning coordinated family outfits than I'd like to admit.
My tips? Pretty simple. Pick a color theme and stick with it. Pictures look best when outfits are cohesive. I usually pick mostly neutral colors and one bright one (keep in mind that white clothes rarely photograph well…..so use blush or off white instead).
Our favorite Family Photos Outfits
This family photo shoot is still my favorite to date. Our outfits were comfortable, and Lydia had a total blast. We shot them at our local Christmas tree farm and those pops of red? Perfect for holiday cards. To see the ultimate cuteness, check out the full blog post we did…..Lydia dancing around in the trees is a framed photo on my desk at work, I love it!
Last year, when I planned these family pictures with our red rain boots…..the forecast said nothing about rain. Well, guess what happened in the middle of the shoot. Luckily, we also had a really cute umbrella……and the pictures are adorable. Rain boots are a great option for a rainy day shoot…….even rain coats and puddle splashing can be great!
If you're planning a beach shoot, most people tend to wear white. Well, every photographer I've worked with has specifically said how hard it is to shoot white against light sand. A great alternative? Soft neutrals. For these beach photos, we used tans and greys. Still got that neutral vibe, without washing out the photos.
We are a sneaker family. In fact, my husband and I even wore Converse sneakers to our wedding. So Lydia's first sneakers? Were high top Converse. And we knew we had to do a fun family sneaker shoot. I love these casual pictures, and they made REALLY adorable holiday cards!
Looking for a classic family photo outfit that will stand the test of time? Nautical stripes are always a great bet! Years later, I still love these pictures (and I can't get over how little Lydia was)!
Blue is a universally flattering color, and always looks GREAT in pictures (mustard yellow too). Try mixing different shades of blue for great looking colors that pop in photographs!
