DIY Valentine Decorations: Love Note Mailbox
I still remember how my mom made lunches special in 3rd grade. The year before, my family had gotten a computer, and one of the programs on it was Print Shop. Each day, my mom made a card and put it inside my lunchbox. Fortunately somehow in my 3rd grade mind, I thought to save all the cards, and I still have them in a box at my house.
The memory of my 3rd grade lunches was the inspiration for these Valentine Decorations. They are a fun way to engage with kids or significant others leading up to Valentine's Day (and really, there is nothing saying that they have to stop after Valentine's Day).
I found these metal mailboxes in the Dollar Spot at Target (here are similar ones available on Amazon). To personalize these boxes, I used some permanent adhesive vinyl. There were two items that I wanted to put onto the mailboxes, “love notes” on the side, and an initial on the front (the heart came pre-printed on the mailbox).
The great thing about using a vinyl cutter is that you can use any font already on your computer! I played around until I found the perfect fonts for the design (“love notes” is Antero, the “B & K” are alternate characters in Samantha Upright). I decided that I wanted to do a pink and white theme for the mailbox so I cut “love notes” and some hearts out of pink, and then the initial and a background for the “love notes” out of white.
Once the vinyl was cut and weeded, I simply transferred it onto the mailboxes and they were ready to go!
These mailboxes would be great to sit on the mantle or along with other Valentine decorations. Each day, leave a note or small gift inside (like a piece of chocolate). If you are doing this with a child, you could encourage them to draw a picture or leave a note as well so that it is a back-and-forth communication.
These Valentine's Day love note mailboxes could become a great yearly tradition (especially if you keep the notes and see how they change throughout the years). Do you have any fun Valentine's Day traditions?
