Mamas Making a Difference: After months of planning, I'm proud to announce…..Mamas Making a Difference is HERE! We are teaming up with three amazing brands so that you can shop for a cause and to give back to classrooms across the country!
This post is probably the most important one I've ever written. In fact, I'm a little nervous to hit publish. Why? Because this project means the world to me and I hope that it strikes a chord with you.
I am a teacher in a low performing school here in Los Angeles. I see the faces of poverty every single day. As a teacher, I'm a natural helper. So how does it feel to teach children who don't have their basic needs met? How does it feel to see children arrive each morning hungry? How does it feel to see them without jackets in the winter? To know that they slept in a car the night before? It feels like I can NEVER do enough. It feels like I can never HELP enough. It feels like a constant reminder that I am blessed. I attended wonderful schools, with fabulous teachers who inspired me to LOVE learning. Attending college wasn't an option, it was a requirement.
That is what I want for my students. Each and every one of them. My first year of teaching, I spent over $5,000 on classroom supplies. That didn't include textbooks, paper, pencils or erasers (those are provided by government funding). But, would YOU have loved school if that was all you had? Probably not. I spent that money on a classroom library filled with books. I spent it on pencil boxes, and art supplies. I spent it on educational board games and manipulatives for math instruction. And trust me, the story is the same in every classroom. Statistically, teachers spend between $500 and $2,000 a year on their classrooms. And when you teach in a high poverty area? You can only imagine how that number grows.I decided…….to do something about it. I truly believe that our country wants to help. That families everywhere want to support the students of our nation and to support the teachers that serve them…..but HOW? Donor's Choose is an amazing organization that I have worked with as a classroom teacher. It allows teachers everywhere to submit supply requests. From computers to crayons to books, teachers are able to outline classroom needs. The public can search classrooms, projects, even specific teachers, and donate to their requests. Once a request is fully funded, Donors Choose sends THOSE supplies directly to the classroom. Amazing right? So, I decided to think outside the box a bit. As a blogger, I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing businesses. And as a teacher, I know how vast our needs are. I'm bringing brands and teachers together to help children everywhere. Each month, Lydia and I will be collaborating with a group of brands for Mamas Making a Difference. We'll showcase the items here, and those brands? They'll be donating 10% of the total sales of THAT item for the ENTIRE MONTH to Donors Choose. In fact, you'll be able to see us funding those Donors Choose projects live after the month ends (on facebook live).
